Do you have a foreign (non-SA) passport?

As the title says, do you have a foreign (non-SA) passport? Given the current talk around EWC it seems like an interesting discussion. Bonus points if you have a story to share.

I only have an SA passport, though I do have Dutch residence that allows me to live and work in the Netherlands (as well as travel restriction-free in the Schengen area). I came over to NL on a work visa sponsored by a Dutch company, but have since got my own residency permit as the spouse of an EU national (my Wife is South African with Portuguese citizenship).

Kids can get citizenship from you AFAIK, a friend of ours back in SA was in the same situation. I don't know about your wife in terms of getting citizenship just through marriage, but I know she can live/work here as the spouse/mother of Dutch citizens.

I think the wife can get citizenship after something like 10 years living in Holland with me.
Unless I adopt the kids then they're probably not gonna get.

Ive got british ancestory ties if needed, but wife is a Canadian citizen. Weve already processed the paperwork and hope to emigrate by March/April next year.

Doing the maths recently, Ill likely end up paying the same amount of tax over there compared to what Im paying here, but will be getting sooo much more from it. Free health, education and much better safety and security with working public spaces.

Here I get virtually nothing for it in relation.

Yes, British passport, my father was born and partly raised in the UK before my grandparents emigrated to South Africa in the late 1960's.

Ye it becomes and issue every now and then as the rules change.
A while ago SA said we couldn't hold both either.
Either way I meet the criteria to still have both, and if forced to choose it's a no brainer.

Ah right. Adoption works then.

For the wife, she can get it far quicker through naturalisation. She needs to live here for 5 years uninterrupted and take the inburgering exam, then apply. The only issue is you have to renounce your other citizenship. This is a backup route for me if I don't successfully apply for Portuguese citizenship through marriage.

My Dutch mate in SA got his kids Dutch citizenship and they could still keep their SA citizenship. This was a year or two ago. But I have no idea how that worked.

hang in there, it will finally happen. I was lucky and got mine quickly but a friend was waiting ages until he went to another office. Turns out the one he was at was just useless.

Just about every country in the world will allow you to have dual citizenship if you gained that citizenship essentially at birth

It is when you get naturalised (ie you had a choice in the matter) where they won't allow dual

If you were a Dutch citizen when your kid is born, then you can apply for the kid. Wife can be written into your passport, but doesn’t become a citizen automatically
