Do you leave your Router on

Lightning protection, haven't seen any worth writing home about, unless it costs an arm and a leg, and then some ...

The one that came with the router from Telkom truly eff's up my ADSL connection, been running 6 years, 24/7 without any "lightning protection" ...

Even survived the surges the local municipal electcity supply caused just before the soccer world cup but took out 3 computers and 2 monitors ...

I switch it off when I leave for work to save on electrickcity.

Save on electricity? They use usually no more than 4-6 watts at max and probably only 400 milliwatts or less at idle.

Forgetting an energy saver light bulb on all day will use more electricity than the router will use in a week ...

But if it floats your boat go for it ...

Always on unless I hear lightening. Our area gets plenty of lightening strikes.

you hear lightening???

Lightening vs Lightning

The English words lightening and lightning are only one letter apart in spelling and pronunciation, but worlds apart in meaning. The lightning bolt of comprehension you get after reading this lesson will start lightening your confusion.

Lightening

Lightening is the present participle of the verb "to lighten," and refers to the process of making something lighter in color. Lightening is the opposite of darkening, or making something darker.

Lightening also refers to the process of making something lighter in weight. Lightening is the opposite of making something heavier.

The Bottom Line

The confusion between lightening and lightning is due to their similar spelling and pronunciation. Just remember that to be quick like lightning, you need to lighten your load by leaving out the e.

I leave everything on.
Routers and PCs on lightening protection.
Got a cheap upgrade to a 3D 42" TV and 720p to 1080p projector though :D

While ago my TP-Link 8960 was taken out by lightning. And that in CPT, of all places.:wtf: At least I thought it was bricked coz it didn't work anymore. But I love that router (guess I'm gonna divorce my woman and marry the TP-Link:love:) so just 2 weeks ago I gave it another try ... all fine, A-OK! :D

Well, just for the off chance of the occasional lightning I won't stop surfing and torrenting. Always ON for me. Particularly when not at home, coz that's the time when my inner pirate is most busy.

I leave it on. Not worth the hassle of climbing up to the thing every morning. Plus the TP-Link firmware is stupid, so anytime it is restarted I have to re-enable some settings manually. They don't use enough electricity to justify the effort.

Same here, until Telkom changed some cables.

Now I have to physically disconnect it from the phone line or it'll get klapped by lightning. :( Lost four routers and three motherboards and NIC's already :(

Hi used to have the same problem , added a lightning conductor pole to the roof and none since ( 3 years) touch wood.

I live on a hill in Gauteng which seems to have iron or conductive material which attracts unbelievable lightning strikes. Over the years I've lost 3 routers and a motherboard due to lightning.

Therefore, I unplug at the phone jack and switch off when there's storm activity and do the same when leaving for work in summer. In winter it stays on 24/7.
