On 24/7...if there is a storm I evaluate on a case by case basis based on storm severity & whether I'm doing something important online.
Realistically though on the highveld you can expect a router to get wiped out every ~2 years, so like DJ I do take the occasional risk.
Lightning?
Also, remember that the phone line is also metal, so just as susceptible to a lightning strike as the power cable.
I lost a modem and an ethernet port on a computer in a lightning strike (missus pulled out power cables but forgot about phone cable before a storm).
i disconnect when I leave home and reconnect when I'm back later in the afternoon. i also disconnect when there's lightning.
I don't even unplug during storms. I'm hardcore like that...
Hey guys,
Wonder if anyone can help me. I have the Netgear N300 wireless router from Telkom. After last nights storm it seems that its completely furked.
All the lights that were on (power, ethernet, wireless) seems to be stuck, and there's no connectivity. It's probably completely screwed, but just checking if there isn't someone can recommend to get it fixed.
What I've tried this far. Keeping it disconnected from power for 24 hours. No change. When I plug it back in, the lights just go back on they way they were stuck. And that's it.
I've also tried resetting it via the small little hole at the bottom with a toothpick. Don't know how long I should be pressing it, but 10 seconds made no difference.
I'm open for suggestions that doesn't including kicking it to the curb and getting a new one.
Thanks!
