We need to try an educate the "uninitiated" when it comes to FA's in a friendly & polite manner.
Debunk (fight) the anti spew, braai stories and promote the good, governments overreach SAPS etc into the FCA is too much, as for one example CFR serves no purpose in South Africa, and actually needs to be dissolved entirely.

That's the important part people like to gloss over. It really does matter where you live. If we look at Cape Town the murder rate for the whole city is well above the national average, but at the same time the majority of those murders happen in a handful of suburbs while the rest have very low murder rates. Even zero in some cases.

Interestingly Ukraine sits right next to South Africa on that list. They're actually quite similar in a number of ways - similar land area (at least pre-annexation), similar population until about 2014 or so (theirs has been declining birth rate there while ours is showing no signs of slowing down).

They have little to zero violent crime. We have a lot.

So adding more guns into hands of civilians I don't think will solve things here. There's no magic bullet (if you'll pardon the pun).

The key fact is that South Africa has long been a violent society. If you look at the historical murder rates of South Africa versus many other countries it has been relatively high for a long time. It's been 30 or more per 100,000 almost every year since the 1960s. The last time it was even in the ballpark of what would be considered a developed country rate was before 1930 and even then it would been considered quite high for a developed country. So it's always been a relatively dangerous place to live.

The idea that South Africa was very safe or gun ownership or the death penalty kept the murder rate down is akin to the ridiculous fantasy that rapists were routinely caught and convicted under the National Party. Never mind the even sillier idea that it was common for them to be executed. In fact while the rape rate was certainly lower back then it was still exceptionally high. Again it's a violent country and has been longer than most people's living memory.

I don't know the figures for the rest of South Africa, but in the Western Cape the vast majority of murders are gang related, arguments, domestic violence, vigilantism and revenge. Putting more guns into people's hands is not going to reduce any of those. Just as banning them isn't going to change the violent nature of the country.

A piece of comedy that happened by accident, but also an example of a situation where a gun would have proved completely useless in a real threat situation. Indiana would have already been dead before he even had a chance to get his hand on his gun if the swordsman had just attacked him instead of showing off. In a real street situation where someone confronts you with a knife and they're truly intent on killing you you're already dead. The only criminal you're scaring off in those sort of circumstances by letting them know you're armed is one that isn't that dangerous and didn't really want to stab you anyway.

Not arguing............... but this story has a happy ending.

About 12 months ago a group of thugs ambushed and tried to hijack a RAM courier van. AFAIK RAM are the only courier licenced to carry firearms so there were guns onboard.

Idiots didn't realise the van was parked outside a gun shop. Staff from the shop heard a commotion, ran outside and shot the lot of them DEAD :thumbsup:

I THINK it was in Vereeniging.

There's numerous research and statistics on this, an armed populace does indeed have influence on crime statistics, gun control does the opposite, whereby if the government stricken the laws, regulations and legislation around gun ownership, then it's only the criminals that benefits from it.

And just to add onto that, as for South Africa, it was clear that visible policing (boots on the ground so to speak) would be the most effective method to reduce crime overall, the SAPS / Law Enforcement actually just doing their jobs in short, as pointed out in the Witwatersrand University report School of Governance report titled "Analysis of the Effect of the Firearms Control Act on Crime 2000 - 2014.

Last I heard, the owner passed away in a car accident, and the admin details of the site could not be retrieved. It's possible that the site was shut down. I'm not saying it was, but it's possible.

Yes it was a few months ago, but if they don't have access, I'm not sure how things will proceed. It may be that, I don't know. Or it's just the host or CF or whatever. Could be anything.
