Do you own a self defense weapon?

Seriously? You think a pepperball beats 5 rounds of 9mm hollowpoint to the chest? Forget it. Also, the sound of that 9mm discharging is going to activate the scene and any accomplices will be running.

I think it might depend on where exactly the bullet hits them whereas if you merely connect anywhere with the gas pellet they will be stopped from doing whatever they were doing. Dude there are stories of people being hit by a 9mm and not even realising it until a few minutes later. Rare for sure but I am given to believe it has happened.

When I did my firearm training course, the shotgun practical shooting was the easiest to rip the target paper to shreds. Even my wife EASILY managed to hit every single target every single time with shotgun rounds. If you are missing under any circumstances with a shotgun, you really shouldn't own any firearm. You are worse than just a sht shot.
Tell us more about the training and shooting conditions if you do not mind please?

Not that rare at all, adrenalin and drugs cause very strange things to happen which we often believe not possible.

I said it before, handguns practical to carry and conceal are not great fight stoppers at all, handgun stopping power for these is a myth.
Personally I do not believe a pepper/solid gun will do any better, but there are so many variables at play anything is possible.

Next to my bed,a garden machete sharpened on the angle grinder.Dunno how effective it will be but it makes me sleep better knowing it's there.

Shooting was done in an indoor range. Handgun and shotgun was done at about 5-10m. You had to hit the target paper which was an A4 sized piece of paper with EVERY shot (had to shoot around 20 or so rounds). Same with the rifle and carbine/semi auto rifle, but just at a longer range. Think it was around 15-20m. If you missed one shot, you had to redo the shooting part of the training at your cost for the ammo. Shooting part only happened once you had passed the theory exam which was about a 2 hour exam and about 150 marks if memory serves me. My wife and I both signed up for complete course. We can own any legally sold weapon.

Hope Ive answered what you wanted to know?

You should really read more on the subject, educate yourself, and no, John Wick is not an educational documentary.

And thanks, I will tell myself that since I have done the homework, regularly do the training and practice, so I have a very solid, proven base.

Thanks for the entertainment though, it is really appreciated, looking forward to more of the same.
Hey leave Keanu out of this.

Thanks for the sage advice too. Comforting.

If you want entertaining, the buck stops here:

Thanks, you did.

So this was part of proficiency training then, and well done for both of you doing it and passing

The thing is, this was a stationary paper target.

When SHTF, even the most basic motor skills become very difficult or even impossible to do, think about any situation where you had a big fright, maybe a serious car accident or such, and think back if you were maybe shaking, dropping the keys, etc.

Under these conditions, moving targets, trying to find and shoot from cover, not idea stance, bad lighting, targets possible shooting back or rushing you with a knife, it becomes really easy to miss with any firearm, even at very close distance.

Watch videos of police shootings in the US, many available on youtube, these are guys that do it for a living, train and shoot quite a bit, and see how often they miss at very close ranges.

Anyway, great that you have done your training, I probably missed it somewhere in the thread, but do you have competency yet and have you bought or planned to buy any firearms yet?

And just to get back to the topic, I own firearms, have knives (for cooking mostly, and biltong), pepper spray (Sabre Red gel rather than spray), and my family also have firearms and train/shoot regularly.

Outside that we have early warning systems in place which form part of the defence.

Thanks, you did.

I dont like to advertise that I own a firearm. But yes, I own two firearms. A 9mm and 7.65mm. Both I carry around, and both are loaded with hollow points that will do serious damage to flesh it hits. My wife a 9mm short also loaded with hollow points. She also carries everywhere. Both of us have dedicated sport shooting status so can own as many weapons as we can afford and as much ammo as we can afford. We both visit the range at least once a month to hone our skills. I must admit though, we dont shoot at moving targets. But I honestly think when that day does arrive, we are going to hit at least 1/3 of the rounds we fire.

My wife is actually a better shot than I am, but I heard its because woman are generally calmer? I dont know if thats true, but my ego believes it 100%.

Next firearms we are buying are shotguns or AK47 (yes I know its extreme), but I have heard one of these being fired with ear protection and its still a very intimidating weapon.

Great!!

Both my wife and daughter are better shots with handguns than I am, not with long guns though but I shoot those a lot more than they do.

Maybe it is because they are so used to pointing their fingers at us when we are in trouble, so pointing is very natural for them
In general I think it is because they listen to instruction and do not believe they can naturally do it well, which most men seem to do.

My only concern is the fokers thinking the Byrna is a real gun and they shoot you for it!

Anyone actually have a Byrna and ever used it?
Yes and Yes. Effective against obstinate window washers in Bedfordview and people who walk home drunk AF and shout instead of talk. Vengeance dispatched from 30 meters. SO carries daily as its better than her hand to hand combat skills.

well done on keeping your daughter involved and proficient. i find it very sad when a home with firearms only has one person proficient in handling them. to me that is dangerous too for a multitude of reasons.

Not much defensive weapons.

Lots of offensive weapons though - for example, there is no such thing as transgender - it is just mental illness.
