I've been hamster-sitting for a few weeks now and I must admit, I feel like getting my own one. This thing is so damn cute  He is so small, like a little person with moods and habits. He looks the cutest when he decides he wants to sleep. He curls himself up and places his little arms under his face, yawns and I can see his eyes are almost closed. He also looks super cute when he stands on his feet and looks around. I just want to snuggle him :whistling:

Anyone else have hamsters?

Prefer rats actually. Far more intelligent and can actually be very good pets :)

Mating and longevity
Syrian hamsters typically live no more than two to three years in captivity, less than that in the wild. Russian hamsters (Campbell's and Djungarian) live approximately 2 to 4 years in captivity, and Chinese hamsters 2.5 to 3 years. The smaller Roborovski hamster often lives to 2–3 years in captivity.[1] Both golden and Russian hamsters mature quickly and can begin reproducing at a young age (4–5 weeks), whereas Chinese hamsters will usually begin reproducing at 2–3 months of age, and Roborovskis at 3–4 months of age.

Left to their own devices, hamsters will produce several litters a year with several pups in each litter. When seen from above, a sexually mature female hamster has a trim tail line; a male's tail line bulges on both sides. This might not be very visible in all species. Male hamsters typically have very large testes in relation to their body size. Before sexual maturity occurs at about 4–6 weeks, it is more difficult to determine a young hamster's sex. When examined, female hamsters have their anal and genital openings close together, whereas males have these two holes farther apart (the penis is usually withdrawn into the coat and thus appears as a hole or pink pimple).[3]

It should also be noted that if a captive hamster is left for extended periods (3–4 weeks and more) with her litter, there is a high possibility that she will cannibalize the litter. It is therefore imperative that the litter be split up by the time the young can collect their own food and water.

Rats make awesome pets!!

I had an albino rat that literally went with me everywhere I went. Could do all sorts of tricks as well. She would follow me like a dog if I let her roam free.

I used to breed white mice. It's usually the male that eats the babies, not the mother. Yes, I did have cases where the mother killed one or two of her young, but they were usually weaklings in the litter and it is her instinct to rid the group of them.
When the mother looked like she was about to pop I would move the father into an adjacent area where he could see and smell the little ones but not get to them.

That way, once they were older (had their white hair) and were moving about properly and normally on their own (eating and drinking on their own, exploring, etc) then I would let dad come back in, but not for long. Slowly at first. Eventually when they were old enough the babies would be taken away and the pair reunited in their tank as usual.

I love mice and hamsters. I would love to have a chinchilla, actually.

I had them but it was too crazy! They breed so quickly! First time it was 9, luckily I sold them to a pet shop then they had 8 I only sold half then they ate the rest! It's so sh*t and terrible cleaning up Hamster carcas! THen they had more, sold a few the rest were eaten. Then the girl hamster was eaten by the boy. The babies were so cute when they were born!

You can't own hamsters without owning pet snakes.

Economically it makes sense.

:D:D

For the sake of interest - why can't you just have 1 hamster? Why do you have to have a set? Or do they die from loneliness or something if alone?
