Isn't building a house more expensive than buying and renovating?
Depends where. If you can get hold of a full title freestanding in a new development with reasonable land prices, doing what YOU want is cheaper than trying to make a standard house what YOU want, unless you only plan to be slightly different

Buying the few pieces left in an established hood gets crazy, they are still usually open either because a) some crazy seeks to profit or b) needs expensive civil work beforehand

I had to make a choice turning 40... buy an new audi R8 or another property....

I went the brick way!
Wise choice. Yes it's fun, but at the end all one really need is a radio and two airbags just in case. A scorro scorro for when it rains and a older Cbr when you want to feel the air rushing by as you drive to indulge in some more lobster after you came from the spa

Other: Std Bank is the collector of my monthly payments, but the loan has been sold to the Chinese, but the loan agreement state, that should I default, Std Bank on behalf of the Chinese will repossessed my home.
How does this work if you don't mind me asking? Why would the Chinese own it?

There was a court case where the bank repossesed a person home, he won it because, they sold the loan to the chinese, his argument was that the bank could not repossess as they gave up their rights when they sold the loan.

So the banks updated their loan agreements going forward.

Own. Renting the same property is a significant amount more than the bond.

I live with my wife in her house. Do I own it or do I live with family?

Back in the day I bought a rental property and continued to live with my friends in one of their's property.
R1800 rent and ~R3600 rental income.
Saved a bit and could then buy a property to live in not long after that. If I did it the other way around it would have taken a long time before I could invest in a rental property.
Sold it since though.

Nope, renting :(

Purchase for my rental property will go through soon, then I will probably try and get 2nd rental property early next year.
