Do you support the death penalty for certain crimes? If so, are you not concerned about giving the state power over life and death?
 
Death Penalty for serious crimes (murder and rape): Yes.
However with our incompetent government this will be abused.
A Few people will get the penalty that are innocent or before we know it using the K word falls under this law.
So with our current government: No
 
Yes I do and no I don't trust the judiciary or the anc one bit.

So it cannot be implimented in SA until all criminals, idiots, cadres and those unworthy of their positions of power are worked out. This will never happen unfortunately.
 
The following is excluded whilst our incompetent government is still in place.

Death penalty yes, but also a 1.5m x 1.5m steel box. small enough so you can never stand up or lay down properly with the roof exposed to the sun in which they have to remain till they die, they'll get food and a bit of water but just enough to survive.

This should be reserved for those whom death would be a kindness, think child rapists or mass murderers and the like.

For violent crimes, yes. Verdict should be delivered by a jury though. Let your fellow citizens decide your fate.

But I'm under no illusion that it actually works as a preventative measure. If it worked the US wouldn't have so many people on death row. People will still rape; murder and commit acts of terror. Its just a way to cleanse society of them.

No country currently imposing capital punishment fulfills any of those requirements.

I don't support it even though I sometimes feel some criminals ought to be killed. But that's just emotion and vengeful in me and it soon blows over.
 
Governments can't be trusted to get things right all the time, what is your tolerance for executing innocent people, 5%, 10%? Just so people can get their vengeance on...

The vast majority of Western democracies have abolished it...
 
Love the idea. Won't trust our gov with it. Death penalty for serious crimes like murder, rape, child molestation, etc.
 
I support the idea in theory...

In practice, not a chance in hell would I want that sort of power in anyones hands...
Our judiciary has some shining lights, and some very dirty ones so no thanks there.
If we were to put it to a jury it would mean almost universal death penalty because we have a blood thirsty population in general.

Jury: Unanimous, death penalty.

Weird answers here people. Stating that you support something, despite reality telling you it shouldn't be supported is a stupid position to hold in your life.
Theory has to be guided by reality. In science, if the experimental evidence doesn't support a theory, that theory is wrong. People who push that theory are wrong.

Start living in reality people, if reality tells you that something doesn't work, it doesn't work in theory.

Otherwise you are one tiny step away from the people who punt homeopathy as a valid treatment for cancer. Theoretically they would say it work, in reality though any sane person would see it doesn't.
