Cut the losses and close SAA (or see if you can find a willing party to donate its liabilities to).

If you want to "feel proud" stepping of a SAA plane on foreign soil, park a few SAA planes at prominent international airports and keep them washed and freshly painted for this purpose. Just don't attempt operate them at all (much cheaper).

If you must dump money down a black hole, dump it down the Eskom hole instead.

SAA is bleeding 20 million rand a day. They are so in debt. Perhaps it could be saved but is the cost worth it. The damage is too great. Its not about can, its about "should it be saved?"

The UK Privatised British Airways who were losing money Since then BA have always shown a profit

Any company can be saved with the right amount of money, and the right people at the helm.

The government may be willing to pour the right amount of money into this bottomless pit, but I don't see the them ever allowing the right people to be put in charge for it to make any difference. SAA should just be put out of our misery.

The country cant be saved, much less SAA. Both run into the ground by the same idiots.

Maybe it can, but I don't believe it should be - not at the expense of us, the taxpayers. I was horrified that an additional R16biliion+ was allocated to the airline in the budget!

Put the thing out of its misery please. If it was a pony someone would have given it a bullet.
Come to think of it I could suggest a few more that need to be put down for the sake of the country.
Any suggestions?

It can be saved, but only if you remove government and BEE from the equation. Otherwise, no its farked.

SAA is not financially viable and is unsustainable, because it cannot pay its debts and cannot be run efficiently as a state-owned enterprise. The state cannot wind it up it as its debts would be payable immediately. It should be sold for R1 if anyone would buy it. Other airlines could utilise the assets if SAA goes into liquidation.

Why ask the question? - it will never be saved to operate as a profitable running business. Only stupid and wasted money from government keep it going. Money can be spent much better to assist the poor.

Totally uncompetitive (195+ staff per aircraft??!)
Incompetent and corrupt management (historically)
Only exists to provide corrupt politicians free flights (for life!!)

Burn it like the rest of SA. then in 50 years we can get Zimbabwe air to fly us from JHB to CPT.

Yes, it can be saved. But not while the ANC is responsible for its saving. Perhaps if it were privatised, there may be hope. But the cadres will not let that happen. The result we are doomed to perpetually bailing out to keep it afloat.

This.

It used to be one of the best airlines while qualified people ran it and they earned normal salaries. I am amazed that they could still fly. BUT!
Will you buy a ticket that might not let you fly?
NOPE! Close it down asap!

Can eskom be saved? There...you have your answer!

With the right people yes. With current management, no.

It and many other SOEs can be saved but only through privatisation.

The problem is not the organisation and not BEE but definitely the ANC and Political meddling for personal gain. The global free market system will consume any enterprise being run like a corner family spaza shop.
