It's a matter of getting going properly, like this approach. Then there's enough finance to boooost it, who knows where..

It's not even about games really. Media consumption in VR can be amazing. It's just that currently you have this experience where if you want to watch a movie on a headset the entire world gets blocked out and nobody else can interact with you at all which sucks for them.

Yeah, it's selfish in that way but others can join them "inside" I suppose.
Normal though, unfortunately, been like that since teens started keeping their noses permanently in their smartphones.

Perfect for porn in other words.

Do you think that VR will become mainstream?

Yes, definitely.

The cost of a Quest 2 is already around the same as a medium spec cellphone and considering how the massive the mobile game industry already is, it's simply a matter of time.
Same as mobile games, Quest also run APK files.

I predict that VR/AR will be the next big thing, like smartphones some years ago. Innovation in the mobile industry has come to a grinding halt the last few years and I think a headset is the logical step up from there. The software is already there and the Quest is basically a cellphone in a case with lenses.

As for what/why:
Especially now in winter, VR is a great way to get warmed up with some exercise while having fun.
Mount some weights on your arms and legs and instead of skipping gym because it's too cold / raining or you just don't want to mission all the way, you can get your blood warmed up at home and sweat in no time.

It's healthy gaming and there's a big list of games and a growing list of games getting VR support like Resident Evil, No man's sky, Skyrim, etc.

On steam you have games like "Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners", Boneworks, Walkabout Minigolf, Pavlov Nazi zombies, Contractors, Blade and sorcery, Vertigo2, Paperbeast, Myst, Into the Radius and classics like Synth Rider, Pistolwhip & Beatsaber which are solid entertainment for hours either solo or online with friends.

Those who think that only Halflife Alyx exists and is all that is worth-while are out of the loop.

As far as "shutting off others" - it doesn't have to be so at all. It's no different than having your eyes glued to the gaming screen with eg. Diablo 4 and earphones.

Competing with friends online or irl is awesome and for once, it's healthy to do exactly that thanks to VR. Guilt-free gaming.

Don't think so, but SIM game types should be good I recon. SIM racing and flight SIM etc.
As for movies it will be like 3D and die off soon enough.

I think VR will be the medium to consume media in the future, but it is currently too bulky, I think it will get traction once their tech is advanced enough for it to be the size of glasses or googles.

Is there any place to test the Quest 2 with Windows. Its something I really would like to test out to see if I can be productive with it.

Show me the VR Titles that are "Must haves". just gimmick games.
VR headsets are compatible with many existing games. It doesn't have to be a VR exclusive game. Simulation games like MS Flight Simulator would be pretty cool with a headset.

Glasses is a design trap too be honest. Everytime someone shows one off they go broke. Glasses fall off easily, it lacks space for battery/processing so you end up with a cable. It does not have roomscale/cameras so when a company advertises one it's overpriced plus requires VIVE base stations. Then it also lacks depth sensor.
In practical terms it's a really bad idea.

If you look at the Quest3, add a decent headstrap then you are sorted. Glasses based VR is a dead end. Modular slim headset with good strap works and solves all problems that needed being sorted.

Quest2 is nice, but I don't think it's good enough for productivity. However the Quest3 should be, a really good pass through, would allow you to use your laptop/phone and Quest3 at the same time.
If the passthrough is very good, then why not just have a keyboard, mouse, period.

How many people play simulation games? not nearly as much as other games.

Divide those people by the number of people who can afford a PC powerful enough to drive a VR experience, divide that again by those who can afford that PC and can afford a VR headset. A sub section of a subsection of the player base. This does not even factor in the fact that some people just don't give a toss about VR, because the novelty of it does not make up for the expense or inconvenience of it.

VR compatibility is an afterthought 99% of the time, because the number of potential customers who will use it is, factually insignificant.

There are more customers than you think. People with money will get VR. Families who don't want their kids to become gaming addicts will get VR as it is more immersive so you will end up playing it for shorter duration to escape it.

How many people can afford laptops or PCs with the latest graphics cards and then on top of that the latest games? Then pay for high speed internet connections every month.
I think all these costs is more a stumbleblock that the VR headset itself. By the time you think about buying a VR headset you have either blown your tech budget or you need to spend the money first on upgrades of your setup or a new smartphone or tablet.

Latest games are constantly pushing capabilities to the max forcing to upgrade first.

New games have higher requirements...

Want to play the latest and greatest game at max settings? Need a good PC.
Want to play the latest and greatest game at max settings in VR? Well you need an UBER pc.

You will need to sabotage to base experience to force people into VR.

Absolutely yes it will...

In its current form, then no probably not.

PC VR is kind of dead (when it comes to making money anyways). PC VR now belongs to boomers, playing boomer games remade for VR. Half Life 2 and all it's expansions, you can play them in VR. Valheim, with a beefy pc, playable in VR. Quake3, you can play that in VR. Even saw a working version of the OG prey, playable in VR.
Release a new game though on the store (most likely DoA).

People are too dumb for PC VR.

But some nice stuff are on the way for PC, the unreal injector (if finally releases) will make around 400 games (increasing each day) work in VR (Full roomscale/3dof for shooters/plug and play), if it's unreal engine 4 and up.
The only two platforms that exist which are sustainable, with developers actually being able to make a living is PSVR2 (barely) and the Meta Quest platform. The platforms can only grow if people make money.
