Apologies for making assumptions. mkreiserfs took care of my windows partition several years ago.

No worries. I like ext3. Haven't tried the others, but this one is more than just awesome for me. Actually performs a lot better than ntfs (wait till the M$ wizards hears this, hee hee)

That's a bit of a generalisation there. ext3 is slower than just about everything under some circumstances. Like lots of really small files. MySQL also recommends using any Linux filesystem except ext3.

Oh ok. Will try something else next time I format then. Been using mysql for a while now and it seems to run pretty fast for me (and yes, I do have mammoth databases). So thanks for the heads-up.

I'm still trying to find more information on this. I was told this on two separate occasions, once when I did my RHCE and we were discussing filesystems, and once when I did my CMDBA. But I haven't found much documentation on the reasons.

I like reiserfs because (after years of supporting clients in areas that get powercut and powersurged almost daily, like Sandton and Honeydew) I just find it to be better when you actually need to do disaster recovery. But with the author in jail and no one maintaining the code, I guess it won't be with us for much longer.

Yeah, but wait, that actually strengthens the case for me using ext3- Mr Reiser's wife was found to be using ext3! Really funny and sad at the same time but anyways. I will definitely be taking your suggestions into consideration.

I'm not saying reiserfs is going away soon. Just that it's not actively maintained. I should rather have said 'developed' - it is part of the kernel and thus it is maintained, it' just not changing. I suspect then the 2.6 kernel reaches the end of the line there might be discussions as to weather reiserfs should be retained, but I suspect there will be enough demand for it that it will be kept. And how knows, Hans Reiser might be out of jail by then.

Let's hope he is out of jail by then. The Linux community can't afford any setbacks in the "taking over the world" plan. No worries about the communication breakdown there.

I use antivir to scan my Windows, er, backups and to fix lusers infected USB flash drives.

In my earlier days when I was replicating my XP system on Linux I tried to run them. I got frustrated there were no memory resident type solutions until I learnt I just didn't need one.

How very kind of you. I just copy whatever nasty is on their flash drive to my 'zoo' folder, and copy a few of my specimens back - share and share alike :D
