I've used it a few time on an external hdd, but could really see a difference from usb.

Yeah, it's very useful for transferring data from one Mac to another - Firewire Target Disk mode. I had a Firewire iSight webcam, gave it to my friend for her iMac. Also for low latency audio & video, it's the best.

There's not a big difference between Firewire & USB 2.0 for external hard drive speeds. Or for that matter USB 3.0. So just get a USB hard drive.

On paper usb2 might be faster than fw400 but in reality for sustained data transfer the opposite is true.

YES.

Also use it to transfer DV from Panasonic AG DVX100.
Now also using USB to transfer XDCAM 1080p30 video from Sony PMW-EX1.

my one macmini in fact mostly runs from its firewire. I have three enclosures and they are fast fast fast. USB 2 at 480 gets divided with each device. Firewire is dedicated 400 or 800.

Will usb 3 be divided similarly?
