With all the DSTV articles and complaint about streaming etc, I would like to know, how many of us actually watch linear TV still? This excludes live sport. I would say live news as well but there are many news channels available via youtube or direct etc. so its not really part of this question.

Personally, I can't recall last time I actually watched linear TV. Netflix, Prime, Disney, Crunchy, Showmax , so many choices to watch content as and when I want.

Linear TV can be either satellite or streaming, I'm talking about watching something to a set schedule.

About 18 years ago I said goodbye to "linear TV " - the last 5 or so years, I have been streaming. Beats downloading, and beats linear TV any time.

Closest to "linear TV " I come is the odd occasion I am motivated to stream a live game these days.

I honestly think that's the majority of people these days. It always boggle my mind that folks purchase these services like Waka or what not but who actually wants to watch a linear/live stream?

The majority off people, these days, amaze me, not only those who pay for Waka type services to watch linear TV.

You may need to change that definition a bit - I watch a fair bit right now, haven't always the last few years, but the main difference is it's almost all recorded or comes from "Catch Up" which is a post-linear option.

As for how many - the one related complaint thread here has about 230 poll participants.

There's also DStv's local subscriber figures, still around 3 million (edit: on Premium alone) I think.
Edit: About 7.5 mil total in SA.

So depends on the group(s) we find ourselves in? I mean this is a tech forum.

Now now, amaze might be a bit polite in those scenarios ;)

Something else that still amazes me, or if you prefer, "boggles the mind" are people who switch on a TV, and "channel surf" looking for something to watch.

When I switch on the TV, I already know why, and what I am going to watch. When I have watched what I wanted to initially. I switch off, and do something else.

My life, is not defined by the TV, and whatever, is on the screen at any one time.

Agree, except with sport maybe. Sometimes to relax I'll see what's on that's unusual or interesting.

Not if I have a choice. However the place I work has various channels showing on the TV's around the floor. Most set to either financial and other news channels and some to sport. All on silent. So I see it in passing. Have not had a satellite dish or TV Areal hooked up to my TV for over 18 years I think. Even before I had the internet I switched to passing HDD's around for the movies and series I wanted as with the death of VCR one could not even easily record live TV and who can watch to a schedule these days?

Wouldn't be surprised if more watch "true linear" in the last 2 or 3 years - those who are now unemployed, and older peeps who can't afford better.
Also some Karens who still won't go out without a mask :X3:

I did subscribe to Showmax for GoT season 8 and watched that every week.

Never had DSTV in my life otherwise and the only thing I'd like from the entire offering at this moment is the rugby channel.

Sports aside
How many of you streamers-only can honestly say you get a lot of quality content?

What DStv used to do was pick and find some of the best series, movies and doccies out there.

Honestly, quite a few of the "specials" I've seen produced by the new streaming giants aren't that good, and then there's Nollywood, Bollywood, and things like Malaysiahood (made that up) and X,Y & Zwood all producing krap these days.

Can't stand it anymore. Even terrestrial radio.

I still remember the days when I eagerly looked forward to the Sunday evening movie. It was usually one of the latest blockbusters. But then they introduced pay-per-view (Box Office), and the quality of the Sunday evening movies quickly deteriorated.
