Hi folks

I have just listened to our esteemed minister’s speech. We missed the first part of the speech, but from what we have heard it was not particularly inspiring…lots of political talk and very little concrete information or promises. We will give more feedback about the colloquium as it becomes available.

Hi guys

Dr. Kelly's speech was much better. Nothing new if you read MyADSL, but still a nice feeling to hear it. A nice statistic is that only a few years back we were rated 15th in the world when it comes to the Internet (all the stats will be available later), and since then we have slipped to way below 50th…

ICASA's chairman is currently speaking. Not very inspiring, but he is quite clear that they are a telecoms watchdog and willing to act if needed.

:( Could someone please tell me what planet this minister is living on??? More and more people are crying foul over the telecoms costs in this country and what does she do??? Blah blah blah blah..... Me sees another 10 years :eek: of us feeling the wrath of Telkom's handbrake grip on SA's progress!!!

There seems to be a feeling of urgency here (at the colloquium), but we all know that this urgency has been around for years. Telkom has deep pockets and a true will to ensure high profits. Everybody here speaks the same language: Competition. Only one question remains…why not just open up the market? It is easy enough, so something is keeping it back. Nobody has mentioned this issue clearly yet.

Most people here love talking (and are getting paid for doing it), so I will remain somewhat pessimistic about true action in the short term.

Hi again

Mr. Padayachee (depute minister) is now speaking and he is very direct and firm regarding the need to introduce competition and regulate if needed. Whether it will come to anything is debatable, but nice to hear this kind of talk from government.

That would be the DoC who is at present trying to manipulate who appoints whom to the regulator thus in my view undermining its 'independence' and ability to function. Currently, in the world according to Icasa, Saix and Telkom are not the same entity, a different universe, and light years away.

That would be the Government / DoC as they have their fingers in Telkoms pocket. By decreasing Telkoms revenue, or the SNO's for that matter (yes, they have their fingers in that pocket to) they invariably shrink their own income.

Lets hear what the Dep Minister has to say as he has been rather vocal about high costs of late.

Problem with being vocal, is that is all it is. Words are nothing with out action. Even our president has been vocal with regards to the issue of cost.. But what is being done?
 
Hi guys

The chair of the working group is currently giving feedback from their findings at the previous colloquium. The findings are very similar to what we have suggested all along on this forum, but again nice to see that it came out in their formal discussions. Some of these findings include the need for Local Loop Unbundling, permitting Vans to self provide, improving the prohibitive bit caps (BW Caps), ICASA to regulate access to International Cables and the formation of a broadband task team. We could have saved them a lot of work and millions of rands if they just asked us :D

Nice line from the current presenter: The carrying capacity on the International cables does not justify the current bit caps and should be stopped. He also said that the broadband penetration by 2010 must be 5%. I really appreciate it that they give concrete figures. From the speaker: “everything that does not get measured will not get done”. Refreshing!
