'Doctors are all on holiday'

The article neglects to mention how MANY doctor are actually at that hospital. My bet is there are only 2 qualified doctors and even medical staff needs to take leave.....

My parents being doctors, they always end up working over xmas/new years because hospitals are understaffed...however they DO get leave at another time. Problem is probably 2 fold:

1. Not enough doctors
2. The hospital management are idiots and do not PLAN who goes on leave when. They probably denied the -limited- doctor-supply leave during the year [and festive season] and then according to law the doctors simply took their leave at the same time when they were burnt-out.

That's a given, but there has to be at least some sort of backup. Otherwise you land up with what is now the case....

agreed but what do you epxect from our state run hospitals.. I come Port Elizabeth... there is a hospital there that i think is one of hte worst in teh country. People go there to die, and you see the bodies just lying around in the corridors....

No doctors being there is the least of our worries... I think the biggest worry is the fact that the nurses actually are around. Those b1tches kill people, like that case where the woman came in with heart burn and the nurse administered Gaviscon intravenously!! The woman died within minutes!!

^^^

your ****ting me right??? Gaviscon straight into the bloodstream? Holy crap that is stupid...
I hope she got locked away for manslaughter.

Doctors have to take holiday as well...
Yes, every month?
Only in a state hospital...
Nope, also in private hospitals. I have recent experience over Christmas of what happens when you are sick over a holiday period. All I can say is don't go to hospital at these times!

It isn't up to hospital managers. Doctors IMHO are accountable to noone. They run the hospitals like their own fiefdom and nobody is allowed to challenge how long a holiday they take, when they take it and the level of cover. Over Christmas several hospitals had ONE doctor on call the whole time and he was flitting around lik a butterfly on speed - giving the least passable treatment to all the patients. (2 minutes was too long for each) Even they were all trundled into one ward so that they could also have the least number of carers around. And these days it's all carers with so few nurses to count.

That's Private Hospitals and Practices yes. State Hospitals are run by incompetent people without any qualifications [all appointed by people like Dr Beetroot] , and even though doctors holds alot of power they are constantly being interfered with and mismanaged based on AA/BEE and other trash. Similar to what happens in sport. My parents work in state hospitals, they can't just pack up and go on leave. But when they ask for a reasonable administrative process to be put in place when it comes to managing the staff availability nothing happens. When they start doing it themselves then suddenly they are criticized for using too many white staff and BS like that....

It's amazing the political crap doctors have to sit up with in a country where there's a shortage. You have to keep in mind a doctor needs nurses and other staff too...if you don't appoint nurses or let THEM go on leave or put a AA policy in place to only hire black unqualified nurses what is the doctor suppose to do?
