I'm in the market for a bigger TV, around the 50" - 55" size. If I'm only going to be playing 720/1080p content, does it make sense to get a 4K TV or am I better off with a 1080p one? I know upscaling cant improve the quality but I don't want it to be worse than watching at native resolution. Dont want to be spending too much, so around the R6000 mark, most likely a Hisense. Any advice would be appreciated.

The upscaling helps plenty.

I watch netflix in sd, many of my video files are 720 and lower, they all look fine but obviously 4k media is really awesome.

Also, if you have a ps4 or such...

I have a 65" Hisense.

Yeah doesn't do a bad job upscaling DVD's even. Though it depends on the TV and it's engine I suppose.

x265 4k content is becoming the norm and easy to download, I'd go with 4k TV if I was you.

You wont see much of a price difference between a Full HD and UHD TV, and it also means you are future proofing a bit.

sorry if i hijack this thread but... If i download an episode of a show at 720p. Via hdd does it actually play at 720p via the usb ports? sorry really been bugging me lately.

Yeah, I noticed the prices are very similar these days and I like the idea of future proofing.

Played a 50GB 4k video via the usb ports on mine, flawlessly, and smaller stuff as well.

Cool. I would have expected 720p to look crappy on a 65" TV

Only issue I had at the beginning was getting sound to play via my samsung soundbar but a optical fibre cable fixed that.

Upscaling of 1080p stuff is no problem as it's an easy and simple 4X pixel multiplier.

There is nothing to lose or gain from it so you'll be just fine.

720p is not quite so straight forward, but even so I doubt you'll notice much of a loss at all.

It will play at the native resolution of the panel.

Otherwise, if it played at the resolution of the video it would be a little box in the middle of the screen with massive black margins around all of it.

I had audio issues as well via ARC on a 2018 model 4K LG and also resorted to optical from the TV to our AVR.
