Does a different router affect line stats?

I've just found out that my exchange is now 10mbps capable, and I'm now syncing at 6mbps thanks to WA's online line speed changer.

I used to have a TP-LINK router which said the max speed my line could run at was 11mbps theoretically. Now I'm using that crappy router you get free with MWEB coz the TP-LINK got hit by lightning.

Web Africa's speed changer wont let me go any higher than 6mb, which must be calculated from my line stats I presume?
Downstream SNR 19.5 dB
Upstream SNR 13.5 dB
Downstream attenuation 42 dB
Upstream attenuation 20.6 dB

My question is, if I buy a new router would it perhaps help my line stats and help me sync higher? I would like to go to at least 8mbps.

Any other tips I could try to get higher?

You can easily get higher so there is either a limit on the exchange or your adsl profile can't be made higher.

My line also synced at 6Mbps for the first few days after my exchange was upgraded, it went up to 10Mbps automatically.

but to answer your question - yes, a router does make a difference to your line stats.

Telkom punts the Dlink modems because they play nicely on their network. Other modems (like my belkin, is more intensive and prone to disconnects on noisy lines).

Sadly, i am struggling to maintain a solid 2Mb connection because my noise [line attenuation] is 57 or 58.....exchange I am connected to is too far and they cannot move me to the exchange which is 2 blocks away.

Why do you say I can easily get higher? Should I phone WA (who host my line), or phone telkom maybe?

the TP-LINK got hit by lightning.
Same happened to me so I'm using that krappy Telkom duoPlus300 again. And guess what, no changes whatsoever. That thing runs rock solid and stable, and wifey swears she gets better wifi speed on her laptop as well. Mind you, the TP-Link 8960 featured 2 antennae and looked like a boss, while the duoPlus only has one short stump of a cute pocketsize antenna. Still works great ... and didn't cost me a dime.

So, any expert advice on why I should purchase a good brand name router? Would also love to sync higher, and I guess Afrihost would love to speed me up (and charge for) to 10 MB. My area is supposedly on some super new and nifty 20/40 MB technostuff now.

Hi There,
a lot of peopole on the forum complain about the standard routers from the connectivity providers. I prefer to use Netgear or TP-Link. Both have given me great service and better in my opinion than the supplied routers.
Will it solve your issue?

I would doubt it.

Regards

Tim
