Is it worthwhile looking into a keyboard without a numpad?

I'm keen on trying one out just for fun. I want to keep an open mind about it but how long does one adjust to a lack of numpad? I'm anticipating a few days of frustration and then adjusting after that.

Also, any specific recommendations on numpad-less keyboards?

Arent most/many laptops devoid of a dedicated numpad?

I used the wireless apple keyboard for a month and ended up buying the USB keyboard with the num pad. And love it

It's crap. Never do it.

Strange, but as a long time coder I find I use the top row numbers when coding but the numeric keypad when data capturing.

In my experience whenever I am required to type numbers without a numpad it is frustrating and slow.
Are you going to use the keyboard for Excel or any applications that require a lot of number typing? If so I would just stay away and far away.

My RII Mini does not have a numpad but as all I do with it is use it as a XBMC remote I am fine with that :)

I dont use the numpad at all. I guess my "growing" use of laptops has rendered it meaningless to me.

As for a recommendation, I dont know the name of the keyboard but Microsoft released a keyboard with a touchpad in the place of a numpad not too long ago.

Have a X6 sidewinder with the numpad detached. I personally find it better to work with as there is more desk space, and entering numbers is quicker as there is no need for the hand to travel to the numpad. Entering large numbers isn't an issue either.

I actually have 2 laptops with the numpads ... the ones that people use at my work also have numpads on them

I do have a macbook that doesn't have a numpad in it's layout

What does using laptops have to do with not using the numpad?

Everyone I know plugs a full size USB keyboard into their laptop.

Microsoft had many other hatred innovations in keyboard layout: i.e. placement of system (windows) keys, reversing slope of the first row, miniature F keys. ;)

That...all the number buttons that I use are already close to my fingers...

And that's everyone that you know.

There are many reasons for not using the laptop's keyboard. they range from comfort to not making the laptop keyboard dirty, to wrist strain and less chance of spilling drinks on the laptop. Never mind ease of entering numbers.

You really should get an external keyboard.

Ok - I guess my more recent experience has been with MacBooks, almost exclusively, which is why I haven't seen a num pad in a long time.

Personally I wouldn't dream of using an external keyboard - it sort of negates the role of a laptop.
