I would guess that the Studio version will take longer than the vanilla version to put together

Not so, it was out same day, 24 April, on ubuntustudio.org

what is the studio version??

It's specifically geared towards multimedia creation, 2D and 3D graphics, audio recording and editing, video editing.

It comes with lots of apps for those kind of things. Plus it's specially modified for live audio recording and multimedia creation.

Website says something about "low-latency kernel" for live audio recording, but I don't really even no what a kernel is, unless it's pop corn :D

well you learn everyday. probably then an issue with perceived demand. i know that for instance fedora releases can take upto a week to appear on mirrors. and fedora is more of a mainstream distro than studio.

Anyone else found a local mirror for the latest release? All the ones listed above don't have 8.04

None yet that I've found, I don't think Studio is very high priority for our local servers.

I suppose one could install ubuntu and then just add the apps that studio uses and you will have the same thing.

I remember they used to have a machine in Rosebank The Zone by YFM place where you can bring your own CD/DVD to burn Ubuntu......Not anymore.

I guess so, but Ubuntu Studio's kernel is specially modified for low latency in live audio recording.

Maybe you can mod the standard Ubuntu kernel somehow? I don't know what effect that would have on other uses though, something I read said that Studio uses lots of resources.

That's called a Freedom Toaster! Aparently there's one at UCT computer labs. Anyone at UCT want to mail us DVDs?

I just spotted Ubuntu Studio in the Synaptic Package Manager. afaik, all the downloads available in the package manager are available from a local ubuntu mirror.

Just start the package manager and search for "ubuntu studio".
