Does anyone use Kratom?

This interesting and quite entertaining video about kratom cropped up in my YouTube feed.
It can both give you energy and be a painkiller/sedative depending on the dose you take.
It's legal in South Africa, Takealot even sells it now.

Are there any drawbacks to using it in moderation and what's the difference between the Red/Green/White varieties?
Also any cheap bulk suppliers that anyone knows of, ideally in Cape Town?

Used it years ago. Afaik there's some addiction potential / withdrawal but no idea how regular you need to use for that to happen. I've also seen some warnings about these new isolates (7-Oh) strains causing issues. Just stick to regular kratom if starting out.

What was the experience of using it like and which variety was it?

It’s mainly used in South East Asian countries, they chew the fresh leaves, you could say it's like their cup coffee.
We only get it here in powder form.

I wonder if this is this another word for paan? One of the old Indian grannies from way back used to chew paan and, I think, betel? nut

Nothing noticeable really. Maybe some mild relaxation. But ja, might try it again and see. Was a green variety.
 
I always check erowid.org before trying something new.

I looked into Kratom a while back, but decided against it because of my affinity to opiates (I enjoyed my last Morphine shot in 2005 a little too much).

Decided I don’t need another addiction and left it.

Apparently the opiate type in Kratom isn't the highly addictive form, it has a different way of binding to the receptors or something along those lines. You can get addicted to it as with anything but it won't become the life annihilating experience that traditional opiates can be.
From reading reviews it seems to be generally very positive:

I had a draft reply which I never posted and deleted ("you be you, no judgement" etc.)

The truth is that you either like opiates or you don't. They gave me 12 shots of morphine after my operation, I only remember the last one. Nothing that's ever happened in my life since compares.

A few years ago my mother-in-law gave me a box of Ultracet (Tramadol, the thing that started Paul le Roux's drug empire) because I was in pain and they made her itch. Well, they scratched my itch. I drank a box of 36 in a weekend.

My wife calls them my "bribe pills" now. She gives me two before we go somewhere I don't want to.

Best case scenario is that you don't like it. If your receptors are such that you do you'll always want more.

Just had to put that out there.
