When last did you play a game and what game where the weapons and armour actually mattered?

It seems that nowadays it's more a cosmetic thing vs where armour and weapons actually matter ingame and they actually make a difference / contribute to your game play.

Sure some titles it's okay and fashion matters, but (a)/(c)-rpgs one would think they are more than just item porn.

Currently playing outer worlds 2 has brought this up again. Doesn't really feel any different whether I have this or that armour on. It's actually just fashion so to speak.

As for the weapons - it's debatable.

What actually did make the first difference was 50% penetration armour perk. Otherwise it's more of rock paper scissors rotation what you have. So I suppose somehat difference here.

But I'm not feeling it.

I guess there's the too much of it: where in some souls titles you literally dress for the fight depending on the fight.

I just finished playing Xenonauts 2... Goeie vok. I haven't played a game that is this dicey with rolls in a very long time  At least they make death matter.

Currently playing KCD2 and it def matters what weapon you're using and what armour you're wearing. Same with KCD1 which I finished just the other day :)

I'm most skilled at using swords+shields or longswords. Also bow and arrows. For every other weapon like crossbows, polearms, axes and even guns etc, I'm still learning and building up skills. Only recently used a club for the first time in the game and it did not end well for me lol. Polearms are handy to keep enemies out of reach but as I've noticed, they break easier than swords. Every weapon has its pros and cons and every weapon needs to be taken care of.

As for armour, you can't just show up for a fight with a pack of bandits while wearing rags lol because you'll see your gat. At the same time, it's not a good idea to break into someone's house and sneak around while wearing a heavy suit of armour because you'll be making too much noise. When sneaking around it's best to wear dark clothes because you'll be harder to spot than if you're wearing bright or shiny clothes/armour.

Also, clothes and armour get dirty and people will notice. Pretend to be a noble in muddy clothes or armour and people won't believe you. As with weapons, every piece of clothing and every piece of armour needs to be maintained and cleaned. Def not just cosmetic.

Everything matters in KCD and everything requires skill.

Not getting this topic.

Gear matters in like 9/10 games I play.

Thought never crossed my mind.

If all the gear has the same stats then the game is bad. Play better games.

What's your previous 5 titles - from there atleast 4 should good?

Doom the dark ages which I played before this, the guns should have mattered right?

It's a shooter so one would think so, however, you actually only need the plasma and super shotgun.

All the guns and their all the alt versions actually is nothing more than busy work without the feeling of them needing to be there.

Which gives ofd the feeling It has too many guns and could be cut down to at least half.

Before that Khazan had some agency with it's sets. However I basically played the whole game with two sets and loot was meaningless other than dismantling to upgrade.

None of this means the game is totally kaka - I'm asking when last did it actually matter other than being a fashion statement...

So which games did you play in last 6 months then?

It is definitely a must play, but it is one of those games that you need to get through the first couple of acts, of which this game has many, before you find your landing.

Maybe after current two I'm working through I'll spin up kcd1. Seems like perfect rpg to get lost in.

Doom is a bit different though.

It’s more about how the guns alter the way you play, not so much how they deliver damage or if the stats differ between them.

There’s an element of Tony Hawk combo vibes as well.

So it does matter very much.

Hang on a tony hawk doom skater shooter

(New) Doom is very much Bulletstorm Lite and effectively amounts to Tony Hawk with guns.
That is so, but yeah, SS is probably only gun you need other than using plasma here and there to take down shields/glass. This made other guns feel weak and unwanted, that is why I said what I said.

Diablo 4, armor is the diff between one shotted or be a god. Also stats equates to tickling them to death or actually laying waste to the screen.

Cosmetic is a separate item that can be applied to whatever armor/weapon you are wearing.

chicken and the egg type of question,
the point you are in the story vs the weapons and Armour you have available and have purchased might matter more,

take a game like Mad Max, you need to level up after completing quests and advancing in the story, upgrading your car
upgrading your skills and so on.

Definitely more so for the better end of arpgs and obviously being poe1/2 and some diablo variants - but doesn't really feel so for crpgs, well most of the time. Even in the older fallouts you reached a where it's just meh?

I guess if game lends into the power fantasy this is what you get. *shrugs*. Perhaps first step here was to first fine what I mean what "It matters" or "I feel it's worthwhile"...

Probably a good start would be that hell that **** I just made and or picked up actually was what I needed vs just looking cool as **** or feeling like god.

In a similar vein I have to always question why plain regular white vanilla items even exist in these games?

Because you never pick them up, knowing full fell they are useless compared to the yellow, blue, orange, purple stuff.
