I'm on contract with MTN but don't like their data fees. If i continue to pay my contract can i port my number to Cell C and purchase affordable bundles month to month?

You ask for the number to be changed to prepaid. They then assign another number to your ongoing contract....

well its your number but no you cant port wile its still on contract, you have to finish the contract period or pay penalties for early cancellation

So even if i keep paying the contract they won't change the number? Chilli's not often wrong - unless she misread my question.

the way I see once you on a contract the number is 'tied' to the contract. so it stays with them until contract is finished or paid off.

Well I don't blame chilli i would have replied the same if i didn't see your response and went back and re read you original post

I see you're well connected - ockiemoto amongst others :-) so i guess you're correct, but i'll still try my luck. Tks

What I wrote about I asked about early 2012.
I was at the 14th ave (roodepoort) MTN. The are the nearest main store if not wanting to deal with franshise stores.

The guy said it is possible. He said that it is often people trying to avoid bad debt that does this. I guess the SP does not really care, as long as they get their number.
On removal of your number from the contract, the system auto assigns another as the account needs a number.

Please read my next(now prev) post...

sheesh made me re-read your original post now

Okay so in a nutshell you port the old number to prepaid and the contract gets assigned a new number?

Yip.

(you could always use a story that you wAnt a new number, but need time to convert all your contacts over a few months)

this is looking better and better. i'm close to MTN roodepoort and am handing my contract over to my daughter because i can't afford it but want to keep my number. Chilli? is that good? tks

Yes you can - ask them to convert it to a prepaid sim, get a new number for your contract, port the prepaid sim to CellC :)

I know that Vodacom will not do this, but who knows with MTN ?

Please let us know what the outcome is, I have family who may be interested.
