Hi all,

Man my first post :D

Who of you can from my Telkom number see what speeds are supported at the exchange?

I currently have a 512 line and would love to upgrade to 4mbs, i think my exchange only supports up to 512.

Unfortunately it will only be determined by telkom when it comes to "install time"

the problem is, even if your exchange is right next to you, that it might not have enough DSLAM ports available, so they need to route your line to a different exchange, making the round trip longer.

The longer the copper the less speed it supports normally.

All exchanges support 8mb's FYI (or as far as I know) it's just a question of flipping a switch on their end + a combination of how far you're are.

Telkom techie once told me the reason why they have such low speeds is that they can't guarantee the line speed because sometimes the exchange is overful and they have to route it to a different one

This sucks, i know some telkom adsl resellers have access to a backend where they can check various things, like port availability, max line speed supported, errors etc..

I was hoping someone like that could check for me ;)

Nope, Telkom ADSL resellers don't have access to those systems, only Telkom does. Unless something drastically changed that I don't know about.

All roads lead to Telkom dude. There's no way getting away from that fact. And even then, the whole port availability/line test is done manually by Telkom and takes 36-48 hours (or longer) to complete.

ADSL Reseller takes your money, but has to go through Telkom (and in most cases, it's self-install)
