Does Prepaid have International Roaming?

I know on Vodacom as a prepaid user you can receive and send out SMS only but not make/receive any phone calls whatsoever.

Have you tried their website check under international roaming should be under support

That is only if you set the sim for SMS roaming, which I often do. It disables phone calls.

But I believe that you can do roaming, you just have to get the sim activated by Vodacom. There may be further requirements in the form of a large deposit, etc.

On Vodacom, send 'roamon' to 123 when leaving SA. 'Roamoff ' when you enter back in SA . That's for SMS only roaming

send 'travelon' to 123 when leaving SA. 'Traveloff ' when you enter the country . That's for voice and sms roaming

Do it just before you exit and enter the country (airport/border post) otherwise you will be charged roaming rates when local

Make sure you have adequate airtime to last your trip. Incoming SMS is free, everything else is charged at roaming rates.

On Prepaid you can only send and receive Sms's ( International SMS roaming). You cannot make or receive voice calls when roaming.

Does it need to be activated? Or is it automatically enabled?

Please advise for Sim Sonke and Smart Saver plans.
 
Hi daiyaan

For prepaid subscribers, Sms Roaming does not need to be activated. You just need to have airtime. Smart Saver and Smart Plans contracts subscribers w need to apply for the international Roaming to be activated. They will need to fill in the application form on the link provided below and email it to [email protected] or either fax it to 088 012 311 3872.

Probably not going to get a response on a Sunday, but I'm in Frankfurt, and my 8ta prepaid SIM isn't connecting to any local network. Will see about Madrid (final destination).

One of these days data (on free wifi) will make voice irrelevant. Already called home on Skype.

Seeing as I got a PM on the topic, no, I couldn't connect to any network while in Germany or Spain.
 
Edit... Oops... Didnt See its in the Telkom section. I'll leave it as a general warning anyway.

Both MTN and VC are entirely untrustworthy on this.

MTN: Yes - roaming is active on your number I checked. Are you sure? Yes sir I'm sure.
... 2 days later... HavocXphere stuck in foreign country... No roaming.

VC: I'm going overseas and want roaming activated. Yes sir all prepaid Sims have roaming activated by default. Are you sure? Yes sir. 100% sure? Yes sir.
.... 1week later... HavocXphere stuck in a foreign country without roaming.

Oh and VC managed the same conversation with activating international dialing as well...also promised and failed.

They can both shove their sims somewhere. Also had two foreign countries tell me I can't buy a local sim without local proof of residence.
