Does smash and grab film actually work?

Definitely.
Some Ahole tried to get into my car a few months back.
He hit the driver side window with a spark plug and the film kept the cracked window in place.
He tried to get in but the film was just too strong.

I meant has it saved anyone's handbag, cellphone, wallet etc. from being stolen? The reason I ask is that almost all cars these days seem to have this installed, yet there are still smash and grab hotspots.

Does anyone have any first hand experience where this has actually worked to prevent a smash and grab robbery?

Stealing the handbag, cellphone or any other items is the least of a driver's worries. I personally know of 3 people where they didn't have the film on theirs cars and their cars were broken into. All 3 woman were standing at an interchange and their passenger windows were broken and the criminals got into the car. They pushed the driver up against the driver door holding a knife to the driver while searching under the passenger and driver seats. In one case, one crimial held the driver at knifepoint while a second criminal searched the boot. This all happened in broad daylight with other cars around them and it happens so quickly the drivers didn't have time to respond.

The tint also protects you from the sun. I can feel a massive difference in heat on my arms if I open my window compared to when it is closed.

This as well, Driving those rentals without any tints - you can feel the sun burn your skin esp around mid day.

I have seen a car smashed and grabbed with the tint. They cut the film with a knife was as if there was no film on. I just put all my stuff in the boot which results in a saving of R1800

Half the reason to spend the R1800 is to get the tint so you don't burn to death, use less aircon and therefore less fuel.

Some say leaving your window open while driving is more inefficient that driving with your aircon on. Causes more drag. Also if you car has proper climate control your aircon dont have to be on all the time.

The point of smash and grab is its slows them down. Especially if you are _IN_ the car when they strike.
If they have the whole day to steal something in your car when you are not there, all it does it make them have to hit the window an extra 10 or so times.

So its a delay tactic, that also helps with sunburn and makes peering into your car to see if anything is steal-able harder.
END.

How many hits did it take to do that?

One. Point of impact is quite easily visible. You'd be surprised how easy it is to shatter a window, specially with a hard object with a sharp-ish point (like a spark plug).

It's not so much the spark plug. They use the porcelain of the spark plug.

Yup, because it's hard and cause a sharp point. Anything, even a pocket knife with a metal edge on the handle makes it EASY to shatter a window. One of the GlasFit okes showed my wife as well the other day, she also couldn't believe how easy it is. You don't need golf clubs or w/e, just a swift blow with something hard.

One... see the hole?

Oh ok. I thought it would take multiple strikes to cause that. Still, the window remained in tact at least, even though it will require replacement after one hit.

The point of the smash and grab is to remain intact, will need a few more hits and then generally pulling or pushing to gain access, so more time for the target to react in whatever way.
