Does this work for avoiding booms at Canal Walk?

I hope it was by accident otherwise that is going through a lot of effort to be cheap

Lol. Definitely inadvertent. I had it in my wallet after a trip and just grabbed it without looking... though it's very similar

How cheap must you be to dodge paying for parking?

This.

I refuse to go to malls that does not also have free parking.

Somerset mall doesn't seem to have an issue with this. As well as N1 city, Tygervalley or Kenilworth Centre. I haven't been to Cavendish Square, Canal Walk or the Waterfront in years because of the ripoff parking charges. I'm already coming to spend huge amounts of money shopping at the mall. Why still charge me to for this privilege. I have used the paid underground parking at Somerset Mall on occasion and mainly due to the weather. Didn't want to come back to a boiling hot car or be drenched in rain.

Then you're missing out on the best malls. Canal Walk and Cavendish Square each have hundreds of shops and those shops often have the largest varieties of goods in comparison to other shops. Tygervalley in particular has a pretty bland selection in the majority of their shops.

I genuinely don't see what the issue is with paying R10 for parking. Compared to the money you're going to spend at the mall, that R10-R20 is almost nothing and it's certainly not worth boicotting a mall over.

Your car is a lot safer in a parking lot where you pay for parking and I'd much rather have that then have 10 parking attendant vultures descend on me to tell me "Your car is okay sir" while they hover over me while I'm trying to unpack my trolley.

I've seen people tailgate the car ahead of them. The boom doesn't go down immediately and will have a car present detection to avoid going down on a car.

Seems to work.

Seems to work, but there are cameras at the exits. I hope they follow up on those cheap skates!

Saw a person trying that at Cavendish. Maybe she timed it badly, as the boom hit the windscreen. At Stadiium on Main there are people sitting in booths at the exit, so no free lunch there

This.

Actually its not safer just because you pay, There have been stories of cars getting stolen at Canal Walk and I didn't believe them till one day I saw a suspicious looking woman trying to open my car. I pretended to approach another car nearby until I directly approached her. She claimed to have mistaken my car for hers, yet I was parked near the boom entrance by the Shell and there were no cars in that set of bays other than mine. She also had a different brand of vehicles key (also an Asian brand) as well.

From what I have been told by those who have had their cars broken into and valuables stolen in the past, security doesn't really care and there aren't that many cameras so you on your own with your insurance. As per the norm in this country law enforcement and security guards are too busy chasing down weak targets... In the case of Canal Walk the security are having too much fun playing on their Segways and getting upset with people who are waiting for someone outside an entrance...

With the rent that Canal Walk charges do they need to make more money from parking, their should be a free option out of principle still. What happened to the free parking that used to be where the Coloseum is now?

... and telling people not to run in the mall lol. I got singled out once, told him I couldn't hear him and carried on. Seriously, I was in a hurry and I wasn't sprinting and nobody else was around.

What I want to know is how to get out of paying at the airport. King Shaka is ridiculously far and a taxi costs me about R500 bucks to get there. Even the shuttle is over R300 I think. And parking my car for 3 weeks? Forget it

Check the lost ticket fee ...

I think at ORT they check your plates and see how much you owe even if you lose or the ticket doesn't work. I would think King Shaka being more modern would be able to do that too.

Often there are tickets on top of the pay station, check what those are due ...

Yes, but stealing a car from Canal Walk is significantly harder than stealing a car from an open parking lot, seeing as you need a ticket to get out and in order to get a ticket you need to come in with a vehicle. I'd much rather risk my car in the paid undercover parking at Canal Walk than the free outside parking in Tygervalley.

Is the R10 you spend for parking at Canal Walk really such a big issue for you? Why should they offer it for free out of 'principle?' If you're going to a mall such as Canal Walk you should definitely at least be able to pinch off that tiny amount for the parking ticket. Otherwise ride the MyCiti bus if paying R10 for parking is such a massive issue for you.

Paid parking serves a purpose. You'll notice that Canal Walk's parking area hasn't been turned into a taxi rank, like the free parking at Bayside mall was before they also put up paid undercover parking. Paid parking keeps out a lot of undesirables and ensures that only people who plan on going to the mall park there. It's hard enough finding parking some days at Canal Walk. I can't begin to imagine how terrible the situation will become if they made the parking free.

There is a taxi rank at Canal Walk already so I doubt this would ever become a rank. If it did the security would need to be tougher else the mall should find better security.

Paying the R10 isn't a big deal cost wise, but out of principle.

As for getting a ticket all they have to do is pay for a lost ticket which is R40 and then get a ticket to leave the parking. R40 is a small price to pay for a car dont you think.

Does the security ask you to prove its your car when you loose your ticket by escorting you to your vehicle and making sure the key fits? No they don't. Why cant they do it? They spend enough time floating around and its not hard for them to escort you on the $10000 Segway or the bicycles they have.

The answer is that they don't care, its just another way to make money out of a consumer. As the consumer we should have an option of free parking for those who want to make that choice. The way it used to be was that the free parking was like super far away close to Ratanga Junction. So if you wanted to get free parking you had to be ok with the walk. Most people are too lazy so the free parking always had space. That is fine with me.

The fact that you have to pay at Canal Walk and still need to hunt for parking is also a another reason why its such a farce. At least at Cavendish I am a happy to pay because they have invested in a fancy system which helps you find empty bays.

If Canal Walk would at least do the same then the R10 wouldnt be fine since they have shown willingness to invest in improving service not just milking the consumer.

I honestly don't see any problem with Canal Walk's paid parking situation. Their prices are fair and your car is a lot safer than at most other malls. I don't see it as a way of 'milking' the consumer at all. It's simply one way of regulating your parking lot to ensure that not every Tom, Dick and Harry park there simply for the sake of it and it also helps fund the mall.

As for Cavendish Square, I do believe their parking fares are significantly higher than that of Canal Walk. Their parking situation is also worse than Canal Walk's, for all their fancy technology in their parking bays. On a Saturday it isn't uncommon to spend upwards of 10 minutes trying to find a parking spot, which I've never had happen at Canal Walk unless I want to be anal and get a parking as close to the entrance as possible. It doesn't help that the layout of the undercover parking area at Cavendish absolutely sucks.

If Canal Walk made their parking free you would experience massive congestion and parking issues every day and the situation would become the same as what we're experiencing at Eikestad mall in Stellenbosch. There they took away all the parking meters at the mall parking lot and now suddenly it's impossible to find a parking spot there after 8 in the morning because everyone working/studying in the surrounds uses the parking lot.

Really though. The price of parking at Canal Walk is such a non-issue that I don't understand how anyone but the poorest of the poor could complain about it.

Zewp what are you talking about?! There is nothing close to Canal Walk. It's the only reason people go there. Why would it suddenly get filled up with cars. Huh?

The first 20 minutes used to be free btw. Was enough to pop into woolies to get a few things. Now I have to pay a R10 fine for that pleasure. No thanks, I now rather go to my local woolies where parking is free.

This.
It makes a difference.
They're already making a killing from rental.
They even make money off tenants. If you drive to work and park, you pay.

Yup. That's where I work. Prices are ridiculous. Up to R11/hour to park on the street. Try avoiding that!

Did the maths myself the other day, ~R2000+ a month for parking if you have to park in the street. Quite a bit more if you work over weekends as well. Crazy!

Here in the Strand the people are slowly starting to ignore the parking attendants as they have no power to issue fines directly :D They also managed to peeve people off last December when they for reasons unknown hiked the parking tariff from something like R3.50/30min to R7.00 (although I think they just enforced a minimum parking period of hour or something). Based on the R3.50 tariff (higher than the stated tariff on the ACE website) some of us that work in the area that park their cars on the street are expected to pay ~R1700+ per month for the privilege. The one way that the locals have been avoiding this extortion is to leave work a few minutes later, after the ACE vultures have left their posts at 5pm.

I do not use the word extortion lightly. We work with the elderly and they have on more than one occasion complained that they just paid ~R25 over the course of the past few hours to park at like 7 different places and every time the vultures surrounded her and wanted more $$$.

Disgusting! People who take from pensioners.

Strand parking is a real rip off, I stopped off there the other day to pop into the biltong shop and was accosted immediately and told to pay up, I decided to go and buy biltong elsewhere rather than submit to these parasites. This can't be good for business.
