I just got a call from a lady who said she was calling from Incredible Connection in Tygervaley. She asked me if I’m this and this (my name and surname) and I said yes (I should probably asked why she wanted to know first). Then she tells me that she called me to find out if I want to buy a computer. I asked her where she got my number and she said ‘from Vodacom’. I have a 084 number, but I’m on Vodacom, so I don’t think she could have just guessed. I then told her that I’m not interested in buying a computer.

i think all big companies "sell" your data to one another. Can't wait for the new consumer protection act, i'm so sick and tired of all of them.

Edgars have asked me now for probably the 10th time, if i want a credit card, everytime i say no, they'll phone again in a few days, just in case i have a change of heart
Cell C, Virgin Mobile - don't even get me started on them...

Vodacom is a network just like Cell C and MTN and they will never sell their data bases.

Since opening an FNB account i get clothing account offers weekly in the mail...

you're alll just pawns to them.. or whatever analogy you'd prefer. They take social factors they can gather and market to you based on these factors.

Yes, this country is government by nobody, as the citizens we should have a say on who or what can access our data but without that Consumer Protection act in effect+corrupt government, we will continue to see such things until someone exposes them in public...

They most probably do. I got a new sim with new number and without even using it once I received an non-vodacom advertising sms on day 2.

oh yeah, I almost forgot.. I noticed that whenever I don't make calls or send sms messages. (Which is most of the time, since I don't know many people). I notice my line is very quiet. But whenever I start using my phone, as in loading airtime etc I start receiving all kinds of spam..

And its just my family I am communicating with, so nobody outside would have had access to my number.

Vodacon themselves also spam more than their fair share of sms messages to my phone, it also just happens whenever I reloaded some airtime..

I got a spam SMS on my one phone that was taken out on contract a few years ago, on my behalf (Before I had a salary), by my mother. The SMS had her name in it. The only people that know there's a link between her and that phone number was Vodacom, so yes, they most certainly do sell your details.

Same problem with ABSA. For some reason when you sign up (or update details) they add you to some or other national consumer database which then makes you information available to the companies that subscribe to it.

i get same got vodacom cellphone contract and keep getting cell-c calls to sign up for contracts for new cellphones :P

Have you all seen this website?

http://www.dmasa.org/ (The direct marketing association of SA)

There's an 'opt-out' register you can put your details on and they should (in theory) stop contacting you. If they don't, there's a complaints section.

Also, check the members section... All the 'big name' SA companies are members...

Have fun!!!
