Yeah and R235 doesn't stretch that far anymore, like a week :-). The canteen there did introduce a budget burger, for it, chips and a coke was R35 but it was a terrible patty.
That would be a Soya mince patty or cardboard as father used to say

Back in my day we didn't claim back any portion, we got it for mahala :) (unless you got stuck on iburst, then you could claim a portion), plus t-shirts, Friday pizza/braai nights, sometimes lan parties, the R350 on the access card. Was a fun time thinking back
From what I've heard IS was really epic until they became part of DD and then were pulled more and more into it.

Friday's were pretty cool even when I was there still.

It was indeed, right up until about mid 2010 or so, this was the first year things like KPI and bad increases started. I wonder if they still had those staff pictures, we had a few done where they took it from a helicopter. Then some of the backend support staff, though I think IS is long gone now anyway, so any pics of me there are probably gone with it.

I get life and disability cover, pension contribution, free drinks and snacks at the pub on Fridays. Popcorn made daily. A chill room with books, games and musical instruments for when we just need that extra break.

Coffee machines that make some pretty decent drinks.

IS was good for a bit then went full meltdown ...

Love meeting IS survivors at the various events to hear their stories of the meltdown.
I think I left before the meltdown or just narrowly missed it. But was there for the start of it, my entire team resigned in one year, leaving myself and the n00b, shortly after that I resigned leaving just him.
A lot of the survivors moved over seas, some have passed on now as well.

Nice, our break room has chairs

My former employer had a chill room. They understood the need for an extra break.
This gulag schitt their pants if you take too long in the toilet even. No such thing exists here.

I could spend it in a couple of days if I ordered the good stuff. A crunchy chicken burger, chips and Pepsi is R88. Probably spend it in a day if I had breakfast, lunch and bought snacks.

In the morning they have breakfast options which you can build a meal from - bacon, eggs, russian, sausages, tomato, mince, toast.

For lunch they serve 2 or 3 premade meals, which always includes a value meal and a chef's choice. Value meals are R37.50 and isn't bad value. I tend to get this on Friday and it's a full shisanyama-style plate: quarter chicken, wors or brisket with rice or pap, and a choice of salad or veggies. Chef's choice is R48 and that is always something different (eg - curry, lasagna, pizza slices). They also like to serve some weird stuff as well; trotters, chicken feet. Some of the chef's choice meals can be a letdown, though, so I stick to the value stuff.

There is also a salad bar where you can build yourself a salad as well as a small menu of toasted sandwiches and tramezzinis alongside a small chicken menu - crunchy chicken burger I already mentioned, grilled chicken burger or chicken strips in a choice of lemon & herb, mild or hot. A hot crunchy chicken burger hits the spot and is a filling meal.

Then a whole bunch of snacks (biscuits, muffins, chocolates, crisps, sweets, etc), cold drinks and coffee (lattes, cappuccinos, etc)

It is not too bad and is cheaper than getting a takeout.

Sounds really awesome actually :-). Pricing is really good, even for the chefs meal, plus the choices are good. We've got two canteens here, run by different companies, I frequent the cheaper one, the other is more like a mugg and bean and honestly costs more.
When I worked at a bank the canteen (the managers had a more larney area) was like that, though SAPPI used to have one of the best canteens, you used to buy tokens for like 50c a token and most meals were like 4 tokens and a drink was 2 or something like that. But this was 25 years ago now.

Yea man being a developer is stressful at times. Sometimes you need that moment to step away and recentre, then come back and darn near instantly figure out some issue you're dealing with.

There is research floating about saying developers and musicians use similar areas of the brain. It's a similar weird mix of structure and creativity. So we're all encouraged by management to play some sort of instrument. They even used to offer free lessons.

I work in local government and have benefited greatly from being able to win service contracts in the hundreds of millions for family, friends and myself.

This works perfectly as I don't do very much in the day job, in fact I barely turn up.

Mine normally happens when driving, or walking to the loo or some other way. People will request things I'll be like nope can't do it right now, but give me some time to think of something and if I can't it's a definite no. Cause the definite nos I used to give, people have moaned that I say no and like two days later I'm like well you know that request? If we did it this way we could pull it off, but not like you wanted exactly.
