Is there a point where DOF is at an infinite point?

What if - at night time - I set F32 and shutter open for 30 seconds .... will everything be clear?

I'm sure you can achieve this with the hyperfocal distance? a wide angle with aperture of about f8(maybe even less) and you just focus 3/4 way into the frame. That should get your DOF pretty much from front all the way to the back

I was under the impression that the rule of thumb is too aim 1/3 into the frame to achieve hyperfocal distance and maximum DOF? At least for small aperture, big DOF landscape shots. Only as a rule of thumb though, hyperfocal distance is obviously dependent on aperture, distance to subject and focal length.

Btw Dolby, I don't think shutter speed impacts on DOF at all. And at f32 you will probably see diffraction that may negate any DOF advantages at that aperture. I'm not too sure about the diffraction issue though, maybe someone else can clarify.

Sorry - I only mentioned shutter speed in case someone came out and said I'd get a black photo as there wasn't enough light with F32 ;)

I'll need to read up on hyperfocal though :/

Good point! Although at night 30 seconds at f32 could still mean a black photo. :)
