Hi all,

I have a question for the pet owners, specifically those owners who have dogs as pets.

How often do you take your dogs for walks?
This can include your kids (they can be, for this discussion a 'extention' of YOU) taking the dogs for walks because it is their job or whatever.

If you answer, only once a week, or twice a week - can you explain why? Do you work? Are you lazy?

I'm having a bit of a debate, a friend says that a dog should be taken for walks twice a day - that seems rather UNREALISTIC to me - I mean, I could take a dog for a walk around the block, but that doesn't count as a 'walk' for me.

Just trying to see what everyone else does.

I walk with my dog once a day. During the week it is just a 15 minute walk, but Friday - Sunday it is 40 minute walks.

Your dog actually need a 40 minute walk 5 times a week. That is what the dogwhisper said. I found that after walking my dog daily, he doesn't turn my garden into a warzone anymore. I work from 7 am to about 4 every day.

I rate atleast once a day for 15minutes. Thats just me though; I live in a standalone house in the suburbs. If you stay in a apartment or whatever, you should only have poodles; they should be permed once a day. :-P

Never but my garden is so big and they play all day long while doing laps in the pool.

I think it really only applies to animals with a small place to run. If a dog can sprint and chase a mate around i don't see the need. Plus swimming is awesome.

I also have poorly trained dogs so walking them is near impossible if other dogs start barking. My white alsachin is crazy, he will choke himself to go have a good barking session and show who is the man :D. My other mixed alsachin is very scared, we got her when she was about 1 and she was a beaten dog or something like that because she is very scared of anything outside the gate. Inside the house she is perfect though.

3 Times a week and maybe over the weekend we will take them to a park but not very often.

I guess I'm lazy.

About 5 times per week for around an hour. They also have a fair size yard to run around and do plenty of laps around the pool!

*shakes head* I have no words for you!

waaaat? killa said the same thing! anyway they're with my folks who are 65+. the husky will drag them all the way to CT. They play with each other and swim as much as they want.

Personally I think if you have a big yard, then more interactive activities with your dog(s) is more important than walking them, especially if you only have one. I've read a book on training german shephards and one on rottweilers.
Its not really a one-size-fits-all scenario. Things like background, upbringing, home environment, breed, personality, etc etc influence whats best for your dog(s).

Fully agree with you here.

What kind of dogs you got? I love swimming with the crazy one but he seems to think snapping his jaws open and closed is fun and it wasn't for me when i ended up in hospital with a head wound haha. The best is throwing a ball into the air in the middle of the pool and he leaps into the air and grabs it.

Could be the reason he gets ears infections but he loves it so much i cannot help myself.

Ok... remove the kids from the equation... how often do YOU MR walk the dogs?
Once a week!

Alsation/husky cross bred. Old bitch and younger male. Both big!

A walk every day is a really important thing and will sort out quite a few behavioural issues.
Having a big garden is not enough no matter how much they play, its natural for dogs to get into travelling mode and they need to venture out of their territory. Its best to do that before mealtimes because that is most natural to them.
My dog gets a 10min walk in the morning and then 20 mins chasing a ball in a field in the afternoon on weekdays. Weekends will be the beach for a good walk or a jog.
If you dont meet their exercise requirements then expect your dogs to be terrors.
