Dog with severe allergies

Thanks for all the advice. The thing is I have to wash her frequently as was prescribed to me. And as far as the new food goes, she loves it but the reaction is almost instantaneous. The smell and itching is as it was before she was diagnosed - I think it's good food but that she's allergic to it as well. I've got her on Vet's Choice Sensitive (Duck and Rice).

But thanks for all the feedback and advice.
 
You can also try omega tablets in her food and apply body oil to her coat daily.
 
stop all forms of food and only feed Eukanuba Dermatosis. It is a fished based food. I think it only has 3 or so ingredients.

Our GSD was allergic to 17 types of grass, pollens and everything else under the sun. He also had dermatic mange (type of flea in the skin/hair follicle)

The dog food is $$$, and only available at the Vets.

Try it for 3 months, but you must NOT feed him anything else. No treats, no biscuits, NOTHING!
 
We have a puppy with similar issues

we are so far keeping him off the corterzone
as its bad for their bones

Some dogs are alergic to chicken, and most dog foods contain chicken

we tried Vets Choice also no change

do NOT feed fish to dogs
except fish food for dogs

what has worked best for our puppy is "Karoo" for puppys
it's made by Montego
it has ostradge and lamb
huge difference

Have you tried a grainfree formula like Acana or Orijen? Sometimes it is not the type meat, but the grains that cause allergies.
 
She's now on rice with de-boned, skinned chicken. The thing is, I can't put her on one type of dog food for long because if she gets an allergic reaction to the food - let's, for the sake of the argument, call it Food A - the reaction literally starts within hours of her consuming the food. The same with Food B, C, D and E. The only dog food so far that has not caused an instant reaction was the Vet's Choice. But Vet's Choice hasn't exactly made a difference for the better either. In fact this last week she's been deteriorating to the point where she's full of sores and smells EXTREMELY bad. This with the daily cortizone, allergex and the measures I've taken to rid her of any fleas (Activyl). I'm not exaggerating or being dramatic when I say that she smells terrible. So I sincerely hope that the Rice and Chicken diet helps because according to the vet it very unlikely that the reason behind it all is grass or something like it. So it goes to reason that if it's not environmental factors, it must be food or fleas. I doubt its fleas because I have taken any and every precaution against fleas. So then it MUST be the food???

If this doesn't work I'm putting her down because there comes a point when you just can't let her continue to suffer.
 
Give 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. Dont worry, its not a lot to give them. It does not even make them drowsy.

Extreme allergy, he scratches the whole day, he literally scratches himself until he bleeds and he does not stop, he has go no fleas, we got him a "truitjie" now, and it seems to help beacuse he cant scratch himself open, but his hair still falls out and he still scratches non stop. also tried different food, different soap, stopped bathing him all together for a while, still nothing helps.
We have started using Calamine lotion which also helps, but definitely is no cure.
We have another Yorkie as well, fit as a fiddle.
We have 4 Chows as well, 3 of them are in superb condition, then one female's hair is also falling out, luckily she does not scratch the whole time, but same story, nothing we do seems to work....

I can relate to that 100%. I must say that the allergex really helps. I've stopped giving her any dog food. She eats clean, de-boned, skinned chicken with rice and a bit of garlic. This seems to help - at least with the scratching. It's too early to see if her hair is growing back and her paws and parts of her skin still looks sore and irritated. But where she normally scratched till and beyond drawing blood, she now almost doesn't scratch at all.

I still give her cortizone, but only half a tablet every second day as I hear that cortizone influences the hair growth??

I can tentatively state that she is slowly getting better - which is a blessing because as recently as a few days ago I seriously considered putting her to sleep because she was suffering. Now, at least her suffering has lessened.

She still smells terrible though. I wash her less frequently now too.

I hope you see some improvement with your dogs soon. Please keep (us) posted :)
 
Glad to see its going better. The smell is caused by the puss from the infected skin because of the scrathing. If you want to trycand find a product called Omegaderm, its a box with sachets inside, 30 I think. It is extremely good and works from day 1. Just treat your dog with 1 box and you will see a major difference. Be aware because of the amount of scratching that all the hair might not grow back but it should not pose a problem in the future.

Just tolerate the smell of the dog and try not to wash more than once a month, it WILL go away.

I have been through this with my 1 shar pei and I understand how frustrating it is, just stick it out and stay positive.
