I have 4 dogs which are in order of size miniature sausage dog, fox terrier, english cocker spaniel and a german shepard / husky mix. My problem is that they like to bark when we (me and fiancee) are not there and the neighbors have complained. The guy actually came to me and said I must discipline the dogs (how can I discipline when im not there?)

So I have 1 shock collar (o the horrors) which goes on the spaniel and does work and gets taken off at night. The foxy has learnt now to bark at any little thing which sets the shepard off, and being a big boy his bark really can be heard. Normally by himself the only time he barks is when other dogs walk by.
The sausage is a simple dog and barks randomly but isnt really a problem but is the type of dog which will bark just because she feels like it.

I have ordered 2 of these for the sausage and the foxy but skeptical if it will work http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/7418...Dog_Stop_Barking_Collar_BATTERY_INCLUDED.html

If it doesn't work I am going to have to fork out R1600 for shock collars for them which i dont want to do due to them being small dogs and the shocking having a much bigger effect.

Anyone have any suggestions for dogs that wont stop barking when you not there? And training school isnt a option.

F**k him. Tell him politely "Im sorry sir they are dogs, I tried to stop train them not to bark. It didnt work"

My dog is like that, my neighbour complained. I told him that he is a dog and he will continue being a dog

Very nice of the OP to at least try something to keep all around him happy.

I feel with his neighbour as I have the same problem with my neighbour who has six howling "coyotes" as soon as they leave home.
He also has the mentality of dogs are dogs and do bark, nothing he can do about it.

I once recorded the barking after a whole days barking torture of his howlers and played it back at him. Within two minutes he was at my gate asking wtf am I doing. They can dish it out but can not receive same.

The by-laws forbid more than three dogs in Pretoria anyway.

At least you admit that your dogs are a problem. Other ***hole neighbours won't even listen to a single wrong word and leave their pests to continue their howling.

Is the shock collar you have specifically designed for a larger breed then?

Funny this should come up now - I was just pointing out to the missus that the puppy has found her voice and I need to nip the arb barking in the bud before it gets out of control.

Its not recommended for smaller dogs. Smaller dogs they recommend the vibrator or ultrasound collar. I found this which may help with your puppy but is fairly pricy: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/75568319/PetSafe_Spray_Bark_Control_Collar.html

Shock collars definitely do work and are in the R800-R1000 region with the deluxe versions going to R1500 and is guaranteed to stop the dog barking.

A shock collar? Shame man! That is shocking! :p

No seriously, that is disturbing. Poor dog.

Dogs bark and I agree that the neighbours should F-off but I have a policy that I try not to pass off neighbours when it comes to my dogs, you never know what type of person they can be. I am convinced neighbours are teasing my dogs because they love people and when they walk past my gate it seems like they stop because the dogs are focusing one some thing very still start going crazy and it escalates until you hear foot steps again and my dogs can't see them, problem is I can't see them either because of the way the walls were designed, I need cameras but until then I won't confront anyone because I don't know if they'll try poison my dogs.

So then you guys recommend I put them down since there is nothing I can do about having more than 2?

No don't put them down, just don't get any more.

Usually there is one of them that starts the rukus and the rest follow.

The shocks aren't that bad from what I've read. It's more like a mild zap from a static discharge than a serious jolt like an electric fence.

I grew up on a plot where the only way to control livestock was to use electric fencing and it works just fine on pets too.
My garden beds are now fenced off with a single strand of wire hooked up to my Wizard 4 security energizer.
9000 volts and 4 Joules works wonders and now my plants have a chance of surviving.
Some people say it's cruel but it only takes one or two zaps before they figure out what not to do and I've never ended up with a permanently traumatized pet.

3 to 4 is plenty dogs.

My neighbor has 12.

I stop them from barking at me with fireworks.
Just light a cracker each time they start, they go to the other side of his yard and leave me alone.
