So I moved to a new house yesterday. According to the agent previous tendents had telkom lines. Its in a prime area, so I have no doubt that ADSL is available. Can telkom just activate the line, of should they come and do a reinstall on the lines, I think the people removed the RJ11 Wall mount box where the lines goes in, so I guess they need to come out rigth?

Should I first order the Telkom line, get that up and running, and then phone telkom so request an ADSL self install? Do you still get a FREE ADSL Router with a self-install?

Thanks guys!

Apparently you must do things in this order to dodge all their crappy installation fee's:

1 - Order the Closer option 2, it costs R161 per month, but has zero installation charges.
2 - Convert that closer option to a normal telephone line.
3 - Order a self install on the telephone line.

This will save you:
R124.00 for telephone line installation fee.
R543.91 for the ADSL line installation fee.

Insane?
Yes.

You don't get a free router - you have to take out a 2 year contract with Telkom. You may buy a router from a computer dealer for self install. You also have to buy a line filter for fax & other phones if on the same line.
pm me for more info.

I took out the 2 year contract to get the router, and have not looked back :)
The router broke - lightning(which can easily happen) or whatever reason, and then Telkom just replaced - no questions :)

Most people get an ADSL line for quite a long time, and usually pay their phone accounts - 2 years ain't that bad.

Self install is very simple and you shouldn't worry about it. Telkom also gives you some printed instructions for setting up the router and line.

Telkom uses router models you can't buy in the normal shops. It's better to buy independently.

Erm, depends. If you are a simple user that wants to be able to do nothing more advanced than dual-bridge mode, Teklom's modem/router works 100%, and seems to be a lot more resistant to Eskom power surges and line power fluctuations.

And, if you need to change it, any teklom shop will do.

I have seen many of these smarter models not even being able to switch to half-bridge mode without hanging.

Can I also order Closer Option 1, and make use of the same loophole, and not pay any installation charges? Or must I order Closer Plan 2 ?

Soz, I did the self install ADSL thing, after paying the telephone line installation costs, and was told I could have used closer option 2 to bypass the telephone line install costs.
I have not confirmed it though.

Hi Guys...

So telkom is installing my Closer 2 option today, but just the line. When Should I call to cancel the closer 2 option and convert to a normal line, and when can I phone to order my ADSL Self-Install? Please advice... thnx

k, me got a new one today.... What number to dail to get your ISP username and password. I lost mine... Is it 10212 or what?

Don't forget to go to www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl

This is needed to "turn it on". You should be able to access the Telkom site without an ISP- this shows your line is active. Once you have verified your ADSL, you are good to go.

That's right, but the main reason for this is to tell Telkom's billing software: "Hey, I am using this service from this date, so you can start billing me for ADSL now." ;)

How long before they activate my ADSL after I convert my Closer 2 to a normal telephone line and place my ADSL order?

It should take no more than a day....they do not need to come out and "check the copper cables"....if multichoice can activate your service online,so can Telkom.....but they take....wait for it.....9 weeks (as in my case)....WebAfrica sped things up for me towards the end though....

however, others have not waited that long....maybe a week or so...

Yes.

I don't get point No.2
Why convert away from the Closer package?
Doesn't make sense as you'd be incurring more cost from Telscum like that.
At least for the R145 on Closer 2 the it includes the R111.00 copper rental.
It all depends though if you need to use your voice line and there are some benefits for calling after 7pm, if need be.

You need to go into a Telscum and fill in an app for DSL - the self install option.
This can be done about a day or two after the initial Closer installation.
Thereafter, go into the store, do the app and give them a few days to get back to you.
Don't forget to get your reference number!

They should call on your landline and cell to get hold of you and advise you of a date and time the techie will come out.
That should be it.
