Domestic Worker Blues

Our Domestic worker has gone AWOL. We gave her a nice christmas bonus and her pay last week Tuesday (double pay) and haven't seen her Wednesday or Today..I fear the worst:(... I think she has deserted.. I even gave her a cellphone with incomer and pay as you go which I top up for her each month, I payed her taxi every day, gave her meals and payed her quite well, gave her kids presents, clothes...and she doesn't even bother to answer...

How long should I wait until I can consider her a deserter:mad:

She was with us for many years and its a disaster as she looked not only looked after our home, she would go shopping with my wife, she loved my kids:(

I don't even know where to start, where do I get someone else trust worthy..WTF! I don't even know what Domestic workers are called in other languages? What is the term in Afrikaans?
 
Could be a prolonged hangover she is suffering from :P

She wasn't Zimbabwean by any chance?

EDIT: Though I must admit, eventhough it is her life and she is entitled to have whatever job she feels comfortable with, a warning or resignation would be polite.
 
Hah, polite? She would be worried that you don't pay her what you owe her, so they take everything and then leave without notice!

I say blacklist the cellphone, you can have it unlisted if she ever comes back.
 
Totally random thought on this one..

Did it occur to you that maybe she hasn't deserted per se, but rather she is lying in a ditch somewhere after being mugged or raped?
 
No man!!! You know what transport is like this time of year!! Give it a few days and some people in ths country doesn't have electrisity at home to charge these phones.
What if she died was in an accident? Or something and the battery died?

sounds like she liked working for you.

Somehow I doubt that.
 
Well i doubt she has gone AWOL, sounds like to good a deal to run away with a bonus and cellphone, surely she earns more in a year than the bonus and cell you gave her.

Relax why are you phoning her anyway, she also needs a holiday man.

Her phone goes to voice mail. She is a South African (what ever that means these days??). Yes, she was well liked by everyone. I am also worried about the whole lying in a ditch somewhere story. She definitely has electricity in her home. Her family lives in one house (six people) and are all Domestics, Drivers and Gardeners etc in Bryanston and heavy religious (ZCC), so much that she would often go home in her church clothes etc also read the bible during her lunch break etc (so basically we felt quite safe with her) so I think collectively she was quite respectable and probably more well off than her neighbours so ja I'm worried that she could be robbed etc. In the past she never missed a day without phoning me if she was sick or had a transport problem.. I'll give it a few more days (say till next week Monday), sadly then she's fired :(

I will then look for another church going trustworthy kind Huiswerker, they are few and far between and terribly expensive these days. I know of people that are paying up to R12K per month for live in's that cook, clean and look after the kids.

Were you clear about a date that she was expected to be back to work by?
 
You can't fire her, she's quit! :p

LA, where are you located, i have a lady that worked as a stand-in while our nanny was on maternity leave, highly recommended as her brother is the caretaker's assistance at your complex, if you decide on someone new just PM me
