This time of year. The silly season. What did you expect?

I had a similar problem with my staff many years ago until I changed the times they may take their holiday leave. As I am in Retail our busiest period is now so as it stands nobody may take their holiday this time of year. Only in the months of May, June and July. Winter in other words, when things are quiet.

I found that this time of year some of my staff would disappear to the Eastern Cape and somehow become lost in the holiday season, often returning 2 weeks late. I had to employ casuals workers to do some of their work and I had to do the rest. So my XMas and New Year was quite stressful and tiring. Casuals in some cases became permanent staff which I was not bargaining for either.

I also now pay my Staff's XMas Bonus on the 15th of January, based on their performance and attendance over November, December and January.
They get a XMas Hamper of food the week of XMas.
This may be different to the norm, but I found that it was the only way to ensure I have attendance this time of year.

Well, my parents have workers who, once they are paid up in month's end, don't even bother phoning to say they resigned...

They just don't pitch the next month

Over the years I have had a number of employees who have absconded without notice.
One always wonders how fair this is as if I as an employer told someone to leave without notice they would take me to the CCMA at a drop of a hat.

I once complained at a guy from the Department of Labour about Monday Attendance and he just laughed in my face saying there is nothing he could do.
Might be funny to him as he gets paid by the Government, but you know how difficult it is to run a business where come Monday many of your staff simply don't pitch up for work.
 
BTTB, if it was worth it you could pursue it legally, imagine them being forced to pay back their notice

I wonder if the CCMA has a case like this on record?
I know a Commissioner and when I see her I will ask.:)

Probably not worth the effort?
 
stupid question, but what does her contract say about leave and getting back on time and stuff like that? does she even have a contract? you could be on shaky ground if you just fire her, she could take you to the CCMA. BUt, if she is in breach of a contract then it becomes a different ballgame.
 
OhGats, not even the CCMA could help her if she didn't communicate her absence to her employer, unless she comes back with a doctors note etc

My wife eventually got hold of her.

Apparently on Tuesday afternoon, when I came home from a very very very alcoholic lunch, she helped me from the gate (I was driven home by a friend):p..and I gave her some money and said to her that she can take off until the 12th of January, 2009. She say's to my wife I gave her an extra R2000 and told her to go and enjoy her christmassh:o She says I did all this in the driveway.

I deny this as I do not recall it.

Sounds like she's exploiting a situation here.
