So yesterday i was on a venture to upgrade my ancient Sony camera i bought 4 years ago...

It uses the Memory stick Pro, i struggled to get a 1 gig since the camera takes a maximum of 1 gig... so as much as i love Sony, i would not advise someone to buy Sony cameras....

but i will buy it again i have had a good time with it. :D

Don't buy Intel

Don't buy Intel either! I'm struggling to find P4 Motherboards at the moment, it seems as if technology just moved on and forgot about me and my old P4....

When buying a camera or phone you should always ensure it runs on industry standard memory, like MMC, SD or CF. Things like MS (Memory Stick) and xD (Fuji/Olympus) are proprietary formats and inferior to the accepted standards.

Also, with cameras, try to get one that accepts AA batteries so that if you run out of rechargables in the middle of something you can simply pop in some Duracells and get the job done.

Lastly, as far as Sony goes, their image sensors are prone to develop stuck pixels. I have seen this on many cameras from Canon A460s to S5s and even a Nikon D80. Sony is crap for imaging products.

Sony is crap for imaging products.

Which explains why there sensors are used in many other camera makes, such as Nikon, even some of the pro level Nikon stuff. Also explains why they have such a good name in the broadcast video market and film industry.

Yes Sony are crap-- oh come on dont you think thats a bit broad. Yes flame them for using a proprietary memory card, I agree, but to say they are crap for imaging products just displays a lack of industry knowledge and blissful ignorance.

While Sony propriety memory stick is a big negative on their cameras, don't discount them altogether. I've used a few sony p&s and was very happy with the picture quality, but more so the build quality. I've cycled with them, travelled with them, had them knocked around and they still work.

For sure, canon and nikon are at the forefront. Having Sony clipping at their heels is a good thing as it means we get better products for our money.

Which explains why I have seen MANY dead and stuck pixels on the likes of a Nikon D80, many Canon Sx ISs and quite a few Cybershots.

I am talking out of personal experience here - I have never seen stuck pixels on some of the cheaper Kodaks I use these days.

Sony has had a few big and public image sensor disaster in the past.

Don't feel bad - my Sony F707 can only take 128MB max. I still use it for IR.

To Roux...
1. I'd love to know where you got the info on Sony sensors being prone to developing stuck pixels (my 7 year old f707 has none)
2. Canon do not use Sony sensors
3. Why are MS and xD inferior to CF & SD (I assume you have scientific proof of this)

BigAl : Don't bother.. Roux's opinion is universal law... even if its horribly wrong and proven to be wrong by facts and figures.... its law...

My how I love to be challenged with a stick.

1. I recently got many images taken with a Nikon D80 and the amount of stuck pixels on them are shocking.
2. A few years back a lot of makers had issues with their CCDs failing and mainly it was Sony that sat behind all this. So even though they do not say that some Canons use Sony sensors, at least we have the stuck pictures to proof it. Oh, and also, I say so - so that is factual enough.
3) MS and xD are inferior because they are proprietary. xD is inferior because it is pretty much just the flash memory and the controller for it sits inside the camera, which makes for great compatibility issues. Therefore you find they have much smaller capacity than real formats like CF/SD/MMC. Both MS and xD can be used in a limited range of device (proprietary) so that makes them inferior. Oh, and also, I say so - so that makes then inferior enough.

Ah, my good friend HealtyHare, I am glad to see you came to terms with the universal law.

Yes - the world is wrong and I am going to challenge it one puny dispute at a time.

Does the Pro Duo not have a Pro converter anymore?

Does the Pro Duo not have a Pro converter anymore?

You might want to look for a convert that accepts SD cards, I have seen some of them in stores. It is called the Canon or Nikon something-or-the-other. It accepts SD cards and converts light into images files on these SD cards.

Rouxenator : And the world ignore you more and more one dispute at a time.

Sony sensors, possibly have a higher noticeable failure rate because they're used in more devices... did that occur to you?

I doubt you could get the actual numbers, but try get the failure rates per manufacturer in a percentage form and you might see your opinion is actually wrong.

Geez - certainly does not look like that. People need someone to hate and to flame, and I am happy to be of service.

Yes - it did - but I would not say they are used in more devices if you look at the lower segment of the camera market. Still they are the only ones I have noticed that show dead pixels (many) on their photos. I have never had that since I went to Kodak.

Why do you want numbers so badly ? Just go out and get them and try to use them to make the stuck pixels on my pictures from Sony sensors go away. My guess is that no matter how many numbers you get - you are not goning to get those stuck pixels away.

You've had a bad experience with Sony, Roux but not everyone has. Let the world + dog know if you want, then move on.

Whats important is healthy competition, and better products being developed so we can take awesome pictures!

 btw the patch tool is PS removes stuck pixels
