Don't buy sony

OK - point taken. It is just that have been let down by Sony so many times.
Ek sou-nie eens wil dink hoeveel keer nou al...

 btw the patch tool is PS removes stuck pixels

Even cooler when you :
1) do not have stuck pixels
2) have intelligent on camera processing to fix it
3) don't have to PS your PoS to make it look like Photo :D

Which explains why there sensors are used in many other camera makes, such as Nikon, even some of the pro level Nikon stuff. Also explains why they have such a good name in the broadcast video market and film industry.

Yes Sony are crap-- oh come on dont you think thats a bit broad. Yes flame them for using a proprietary memory card, I agree, but to say they are crap for imaging products just displays a lack of industry knowledge and blissful ignorance.

SONY make lenses or have lenses made for them depending on the tier of the product. Sony's high end broadcast and video cameras utilise Fujinon lenses
while cheap Sony cameras use lenses made by worse firms. It's not entirely irreconcilable to see different quality in professional products and lower quality in consumer stuff. Take Nokia and Sony-Ericsson Camera phones - the "Carl Zeiss" lenses there are NOT made by Zeiss - they are made by a lower tier company called Cosina. The Zeiss is just nonsense. Anyway - it's a possibility here too.

OOPS discussion was about sensors. However its the same story. The Professional part is produced and engineered according to different standards, that includes reliability.
A military vehicle has to conform to more rigorous requirements than a consumer counterpart with the same badge.

Sandisk memory sticks are reputed to be better and they also make the Sony compatible ones. Maybe try one of them.

As far as old products not accepting very high memory cards, that's not a new problem. Even old Nokias won't take more than so many Gigs of memory, where the new ones do.

Things like MS (Memory Stick) and xD (Fuji/Olympus) are proprietary formats and inferior to the accepted standards.

"Propriatory" does not automatically imply "inferior." I won't speak for xD - I have no experience with it. But Sony's card definitely aren't inferior in any way. For interest's sake, search this forum for discussions about cards. I did some tests on high-end CF cards, and all other cards I had available. The Sony Memorystick ProDuo cards (that happened to be a year older and the cheapest Sony branded ones I could find) performed very similar to my Sandisk Extreme IV CF cards.

And any manufacturer can use the MS format if they choose and are willing to pay Sony the license fees. Which I'm sure they have to pay for a myriad of other patented technologies too. The fact that they don't doesn't mean it's inferior. The whole world went after VHS too...

Also, with cameras, try to get one that accepts AA batteries so that if you run out of rechargables in the middle of something you can simply pop in some Duracells and get the job done.

That convenient is a bit of self-fulfilling prophecy - you're more likely to need to do that with rechargables. No camera I've ever owned that took standard batteries ever had battery life comparable to the ones with those evil proprietory batteries. The one that came the closest was the Pentax K100D super, with it's four AAs, but even that camera came nowhere near close to my 40D on battery life.

Sony is crap for imaging products.

Your previous statements I can pass off as slightly ill-informed opinion, but this borders on trolling. FYI, Sony is the biggest sensor supplier to other camera manufacturers. With good reason. Their P&S cameras is firmly on the better side of the pile. Ditto DSLRs. My Sony T100 is good enough that I'm willing to spend crazy money on a new charger, despite some of the buttons no worrking (a pal spilled beer on it) and despite owning a G9.

Back to the OP... There should be no reason that you can only use up to 1GB cards.

If it uses MS-Pro, you should be able to use up to 32GB in theory, but due to some formatting issue may be limited to 2GB.

I am no photographer... what I am is a Sony Digital Camera owner and nothing fancy too but in the 5 years I have had this thing it still goes strong, is still light on batteries and still takes some great photos.

I am not taking photos to enter any awards but for my personal use is perfect.

Advice on a digital camera is hard if you are just looking for an everyday camera because I think most brands are on par in the mass produced layman digital camera.

Otherwise why argue and get a Canon.

And as for memory... digital cameras should have 4Gb on board memory with a wifi connection. We live in 2009!!!!

They're not limited to 2GB. I have 4GB cards. You maybe thinking of SD vs SDHC (although I won't claim to know the details of that).

I'm talking about his particular camera... I know that MS are not limited, I saw a 16GB one last week :)

There may be a limitation (similar to the old windows 2GB file size limitation) due to the FAT32 system... but I can't see why.

@koeks What camera is it?

I used to have this issue with my old SE phone...

Would gladly take MS-Duo cards.. only up to 512Mb... the firmware on the phone just couldn't deal with anymore than that for some reason...

Gotta love the Kodak Z812 and Z1012 that accepts both KLIC-8000 Li-ion or AAs in the same compartment ;) The KLIC-8000 does last a lot longer but if you find yourself in a situation where all your Li-ions are flat it is good to know you can pop in some AAs and get the job done.

Well spotted

:D don't be so serious man, you'll pop a artery...

Gotcha, sorry. I have thought of buying a bigger card, just because I can. But then, before I had my DSLR, and the 8mp Cybershot was my only camera, I barely filled up on a two week sightseeing trip to the US. Not for lack of trying, I was very snap-happy. But 4GB is a lot if you're not shooting RAW.

Yeah, some cameras cannot do FAT32. Some as recent as two years ago.

+ 1

bought it in 2005 and it still goes strong... :D

@koeks What camera is it?

it's a dsc- p43.

mine is a DSC V1 still works 100%. Altho compared to todays cameras its as slow as a snail, anything over 200 ISO is noisy as hell. I loved it and if I decide to buy a p&s for carrying around or for the missus to use, I will definately consider sony.

Don't buy Intel either! I'm struggling to find P4 Motherboards at the moment, it seems as if technology just moved on and forgot about me and my old P4....

erm, the P4 should just run on a normal LGA775 motherboard which is the same as every other LGA775 board floating around.

wow thats oooooooold, you should prolly rather just get a baseline celeron and 775 board if its that old. the newer celeron would b much faster anyway.
What was this topic about anyway?

It was someone ranting about not buying Sony for something...

and then Rouxenator wading in with his pinion that he thinks is fact even though its been proved wrong.
