Please dont sign any new " Wireless DATA " contracts now or even renew them. Please use prepaid or month to month for 6 months at least. When the Network providers realise theres no gauranteed income, they will get worried and start thinking. Lots of price changes are happening at the moment. Wait until we all benefit from it.

Is this like that "don't put petrol in your car on a certain day, it'll hurt the oil companies and they'll be forced to lower their prices"? :rolleyes:
 
LOL and I thought this wanna gonna be about how it's not a good idea to get tied down... with all the new options coming up in the next two years
 
so people shouldn't get married for six months? 'cos something cheaper will come along? And until then they should use pre-paid? Sis on you.
 
I'm going to take a look at a new cellphone on contract...

...but would also like more information as per Debbie's post before I'll sign anything. An extra three or four months won't hurt :D

hey i think that was a great idea - or, well, the offspring of that idea.

if everybody boycotts say, bp for 2 solid weeks or more, and just fill at other stations - they will have to lower their prices. then everybody goes there, and others will have to follow. it could work if everyone does it.
 
My understanding is that there is zero advantage to a contract data subscriber.
You get forced to use only one provider, and then are forced to live on prepaid bundles anyway.

simple economics here people, the whole not filling up on a certain day, or using another petol station will not work, you are still consuming the product regardless, the demand for petrol is still there, and oil companies are big enough to ride out a weeks worth of people not filling up without being worried.

In the real world, the competitors would simple raise there prices and milk you anyway till you have to go back to the party you are boycotting, alternatively the party you are boycotting goes under and that means that there is less competition, and they can raise there prices without any reprecussions.

also if more people signed contracts then these big companies would be able to predict their revenues far more accurately(a company with an accurate prediction of the future can better manage it's costs) and then be able to pass on savings made to the consumer.

thats my 2c worth with a spanner thrown in the works for good measure :D

edit: after reading my post I have just had an idea, what if you had to sign a contract with your local petrol station and only by petrol there, and they offer a rewards program depending on the amount of petrol you buy, you could even throw in contracts that fix the cost of the petrol over a certain period, with a bit of tweaking you could revolutionise the entire petrol industry in this country

You'd be amazed how many people don't even consider buying a modem outright because they fear it's so much more expensive than it actually is. I thinks that's the industrys dirty little secret - displaying modems on the bottom shelf and never advertising their cost without a contract.
 
Good idea, but more info is needed I also think.

Petrol stations can by law not give discounts on fuel. The petrol price is regulated and not fixed by individual suppliers. Cellular rates on the other hand is linked to a free market (well thats the idea, but this is South Africa after all)

Go mr conspiracy theory guy.
Sure they project income revenue etc from it, but I can matter of factly tell you for sure that a. no one will support this and b. they wont change anything.

When i saw the title i thought it was neotel he was talking about. That we must not sign contracts now cause they bringing out month 2 month soon

the idea does need refining but the concept is pretty good I think, you subscribe to one of the petrol stations and you get given a card which you can only use at their stations, at the end of the month you get billed for your usage, hang on....this sounds like a petrol card, but I can't understand why petrol stations haven't at least offered value cards to their customers who use their stations regularly.

It would be nice if the petrol price was free market and you could sign contracts with suppliers and get discounts and rewards for being brand loyal.

Everybody in the WHOLE WORLD, maybe. SA is only a drop in the bucket. In the mean time, I'll just fill up and sign contracts.

1. The Consumer Protection Bill is very close to being signed into law.
Under Current contract conditions all data is valid for the duration of the month it is paid for, ( i.e no carry over of data ) so if you are stuck in a contract, you have to abide by those rules and regulations till the end of the Term.

2. Icasa has mandated that Contracts ( which Vodacom has delayed till 1st Feb 2009 ) The actual price for Hardware ( I.e Phones, data cards & modems ) be separated from the actual cost of providing the services required. What that means is simply that if you are paying R49 per month for your Modem and R100 per month for your Data is must be clearly shown to you the Consumer.

3. Neotel has Cut the out of Bundle rate to 8c per megabyte and this could have a domino effect on all the other operators.

4. Telkom is Launching their 3G Network and nobody's gonna be interested if the price is not in the customers favour.

5. Iburst has been under pressure lately with all the negative vibes about their service. Expect something new from them too.

6. MTN is by no means a pushover and they hate losing customers and will not let anyone have better pricing than them ( As I type this post , MTN is working on some fantastic Surprises for us all ).

7. Vodacom as usual keeps prices high until they are forced to reduce with no choice.

8. Cell-C and Virgin as usual will surprise in some other area which we have no idea OFF.


So Dont SIGN any new WIRELESS DATA CONTRACTS for at least another 6 months and you will be enjoying the fruits of COMPETITION.

I dont Deal with the PETROL price ! Its GOVT regulated ( raymond ackerman has been trying for years to sell petrol a few cents cheaper and he was not allowed to do so )
