DOS program in WindowsXP

Hi guys

I have a very old DOS version of s program…is it possible to run it in WindowsXP? It installs fine in windows 98, but has a problem installing in WindowsXP.

The files on the disk are: install.bat installb.bat installq.bat and a few .exe files.

Any advice?

A trick that used to work is not to install it. Pull all the files in a folder and create a shortcut to the .exe file. This shortcut can then be edited to run in various modes. Akin to the old pip files we used to have on old windows. The only thing is to detect if the install place any DLL's in windows. Those can be manually transfered to the windows directory or just placed in its own directory. Also maybe the bootup paths and variables need to be set in the autoexec.bat and some sections copied to the win.ini and sys.ini files as in the older days.

The easiest to edit these files is to go Start, Run, type msconfig and insert the new lines in there by editing the required file

u mean pif files i think:-)

a dos program always used to have it won directory, so, first place to start is to give it a directory off the root, like c:\dosprog still all the file sin there (the install.bat should run correctly..batch file commands havent changed much.)
the exe file will probably get stuck, in which case right click, properties, compatabilty and hope it works when set to win95/win98 mode.

I meant pif files Thnx! Talking of years ago! You mean Win or own directory ?
