Change Warlock to whatever, sniper, razor, pugna, pudge.
I prefer to read the guide in its to print format, no need to register at the site either.
Read guides, which is how I refined my strategy. Taking on 5 insane bots, or 1 insane bot on the 3.37 map is a walk in the park. find the map called DotA_Allstars_v6.43b_AIplus_v1.4.w3x
Once the game starts type in -apne
Which is for all pick, normal xp bots. If you can win them you do play pretty good.
I found it very helpful to read the guides and discussions on items. After 100 games I realised today what an advantage it is to play on higher terrain than the opponent.
On equal terrain the bot pwned me, when I was high he had a 30% chance to miss me.
So after 100 games, I realised something elementary.
Save all your replays, watch replays of other people, watch your own replays also.
What works well for me is BoS (Boots of Speed)
Mask of death, Helm of Iron will which combines in to helm of the dominator. (Lifesteal regenerates hitpoints when you do damage)
Ring of health, or a chicken, if you buy a chicken then run in, earn 225 again and make your chicken bring you a RoH.
You can create a shortcut with control 1 on your chicken to press 1 only to select your chicken, F1 to select your character, press either 1 or F1 twice to switch views.
I prefer to have insane regeneration and speed in the beginning of the game, makes me a good farmer and harasser. If your opponent is very good, buy smaller items, if he sucks, buy big items only and their components as you can. Big items cost R3000+ in one go, like a sacred relic. Better to buy a small item, which will give you short term rewards so you won't fall behind in levels and farming.
Farming is killing creeps for gold.
Buy items which work for you, my GF (yes she plays dota and does so very well) buys BoT, RoH, Void stone, Mithril hammer, Claymore for battlefury, and then Eye of Skadi (point booster, 2x ultimate orbs, 1 point booster and the scroll)
Don't buy scrolls to assemble objects, until you have all the objects in your inventory.
Razor the Lightning Revenant, is very easy to play.
Enchantress is also.
Sniper is easy, though his HP sucks. If you have RoH and Helm of Dominator and Hood of defiance against casters you might pull it off. Very easy to deny and farm with him, high attack speed and decent damage.
Pudge takes skill, I like pulling people in to my towers.
Pugna is my favourite, pushes like mad, with life drain he can stay in a lane forever.
Skeleton kills rocks against melee heroes with lifesteal and vladmirs mask or Helm of Dominator.
Venomacer earns gold easily, so you can deny creeps.
Denying creeps means you kill your own creeps when their life is 1/2 to deny your oppont a measure of XP and gold.
Faceless void is fun also, high HP, dodge and stun.
And remember, dota is not a career. Don't play it at the expense of sleep, work and friends. It gives you an addictive adrenaline rush. The game is full of rewards to keep you at it, hero kills, last hitting creeps, taking towers, winning the game, buying something nice.
Last hitting means you get the last hit to get the gold on an enemy creep or neutral.
I play often since I am a student and it helped me to improve my concentration. I have a problem dealing with stress and dota games allows me to get use to stressful conditions, like exams. It helps me concentrate for long periods at a time.
If you studied you will see that the IT people who play games all day do as good as the guy who studies all day, they have insane concentration skills when they do start studying.
I like dota.
