DOTCO pushing forward.

Well, thumbs up for DOTCO from me. At least someone is doing (trying) something. The High Court sounds good, but waiting for a response from ICASA - they can probably expect that early 2007.

...holding thumbs for DOTCO... as the Telkom slogan says :Touch Tomorrow"...2007 sounds about right...

Stuff like this get's me all inspired!! GO DOTCO!!!!!

What is disturbing is the fact that no other ISP's are stickin their head out for the consumer.

I hope DOTCO doesn't end up in court cos Telkom has more lawyers than employees and they're all as slick as yesterday's brent crude.

In the end though - if DOTCO were to go belly up from legal costs (worst case scenario) - IMHO most people would say "Oh well they tried.. let's try out another ISP" and then not spare another thought for them.

There just is no ISP loyalty in this country.. would anyone donate to the cause? Doubtfully, considering even Hellkom only raised a staggering R1,500 - of which one payment of R1,000 was from a lady named Joyce (bless her). The other R500 came from 3 donators (not sure if they would want to be named but thank you to them) and the other R500 a friend gave me to reach the R2,000 admin bill. Nice hey. 1500 bucks.

Mad just proves my point,

ISP stick there heads out for clients, but, most ADSL users will move for R 1 in price diffrence, so you have to ask you selfs if people were actualy making R 30-40 bucks per ADSL account then they would have the cash to go and fight together agaisnt Telkom, but they dont, on some products we make R 5 with that we can barely afford to pay attention.

Well commented MAD !

That's true. At the time of the Hellkom debacle I was still in the UK and not aware of all the rapping going on over here. Now I'm back in nice and sunny SA. Well I put it in writing here so it's kind of binding. If DOTCO want to take this all the way and it seems like they have a good case and need some donations I will donate R500 - that’s a promise. I mean - if they can win something like that I will make my R 500 back in the first month.

I know it hasn’t come to that stage yet, but maybe we need to think about it if needed, instead of just sitting here, moaning all the time...

At the end of the day, I cant see why more ISP's dont join DOTCO in a battle like this and stand together, or might it be a case of: We're also going to make more money out of this new system, so why bite the hand (Telkom) that feed us?

What about starting one of those SMS to donate to DOTCO's legal costs campaigns? Or would that cost more than the legal battle itself. We would have to offer some sort of prize, maybe we can get Telkom to sponsor some free Gigs?

Telkom is such motherfckers...if you read between the lines regarding this statement:
“Telkom will purely perform the role of ADSL Internet access [bandwidth] wholesaler as opposed to the perception created by the industry that it is regulating ADSL usage. Telkom will provide tools to control ADSL sessions,”

It actually states, "It's not our fault the ADSL packages out there, as provided by your ISP's, are expensive...don't blame us (Telkom) blame them."

Well I have only one response to that...go fck yourself Telkom, as I will be moving to services as provided by the SNO next year...even if it is a couple of R100 more expensive for whatever service, I will take all my business to them. I'm going to start comparing Telkom to Hitler or Mugabe...bastards!!

Some of the big guys are also sticking it to Telkom ... from Financial Mail in Aug ....

M-Web, SA's largest consumer-focused Internet service provider, has filed a complaint against Telkom at the competition commission, accusing the monopoly fixed-line operator of "margin squeeze" in broadband services. It also wants Telkom to pay for an upgrade to the "peering" link between Telkom and Dimension Data's Internet Solutions, which provides its bandwidth.

CEO Kim Reid says that because of the way Telkom structures its tariffs, it is not possible for M-Web to make a profit selling Internet access using the operator's broadband lines.

Reid thinks M-Web's complaint is the first case of alleged margin squeeze to be brought before the commission. Several incumbent operators in Europe, including Germany's Deutsche Telekom and Britain's BT Group, have faced similar allegations.

Telkom spokesman Xolisa Vapi says the carrier cut its broadband line rental fees on August 1. This, he says, undermines the basis of M-Web's complaint.

Isn't MWEB backed by MultiChoice, if so they should put some of their cash behind creating some sort of ADSL infrastructure (as I'm sure they havemoney to burn).

They do have the cash. But it's just not worth it. Mweb's position proves it.

Naspers (their parent) is a media company ... not interested in infrastructure.
