What exactly are we hoping for here? The court cannot rule that Telkom may not increase prices, the court cannot rule that Telkom may not change it's pricing regime. The case is around a particular service agreement between Dotco and Telkom, for a particular period. Other ISPs do not have the same agreement.

So basically this only affects Dotco for a limited period. If Dotco win, they can continue selling 30 gig accounts for a little while. If they lose they are instantly bankraupt.

Only government can fix the current farce that is the South African comms industry. And if thay had any inclination to do so they would have years ago. As long as they and their business interests are making a profit, then screw the country / economy / people. Thats the African way.

NOTHING is going to change in the forseeable future.

@gougedeye, we won't go instantly bankrupt. ;-) We won't be able to provide 30GB so cheaply though anymore should we not get a favourable judgement. I don't know what agreements Telkom has (or had) with other ISPs, but I'm sure all agreements must have had the same form.

Broadband is going to change in the forseeable future in South Africa. We are living in pretty interesting times.

if only it was that simple .... the only way is to shake up the government a bit ... if only the ppl would not all just vote for the ANC ...and consider voting for the other parties if nothing else but to keep the ANC on their toes. But this is unlikely to happen in the next millenium :D

Just like people are unlikely to stop using Telkominternet as their Internet Service Provider? It is the South African way, change is bad.

@Daaru, LOL

We live in a country with innovative people and world famous entrepreneurs. There is a strong consumerism movement here. And there is a regulator that is making positive moves and the services of a second fixed-line operator are on the horizon. SA has some of the best mobile and wireless networks in the world. I'm optimistic about the future here.

We as users of these services have voiced our disgust here and through to ICASA. Hell every time telkom releases a new ad it gets removed almost instantly cause someone finds out how their lying. They now just make the ads to show like.......

"man goes into rocket"..................."TELKOM TOUCH TOMORROW"
"man rides car and dino accosts him"..................."TELKOM TOUCH TOMORROW"

We have taken them to icasa

It's up to the isp's to take telkom to the competition commision.
You as the competition must voice your disgust with how telkom is driving you out of business and use the strong movement here to help you fight the beast.
Hell i'll even give mweb a pat on the back if they take telkom to competition commision.

Remember what happened with the HIV medication in this country? Goverment says no. and the people took gov to court.
we now have free antiretroviral drugs for the infected.

Icasa not treating you fairly? Take em to court i say.

How many isp's? each one with just one lawyer? Think bout it. You can seriously give telkom a pain if you stand together and fight fight fight.

@armitage, I've had to learn that as a rule ISPs are low risk takers. That is why they are happy with the associated low profit margins. So don't expect too much from them. The association that is suppose to represent ISPs is rife with self-interest. So no expectation there either.

Well really good luck to you. I really, really hope that you are right. I doubt it though. Too many people are making too much money out of this whole F$$$d up situation. Too many BEA partners with friends in high paces who are shareholders of Telkom or the SNO. We keep hearing about how things are about to change, only they never, ever do.

Dude, there's only one party that can draw away the ANC voter base and they're very much against free market economics, and whites owning land in Africa. You be very, very careful what you wish for...

that may b so ... but I would rather they get more votes which will then give the ANC cause for concern and then they would actual do something to improve our economy. Lets face it, they don't give a damn right now because they know they have majority of the voters locked in. Which is why they don't bother to comment sometimes about issues and y they just change the laws to suit their own ends and y telskum still exists

Not only that, but they are "reaping the benefits", like state-paid holidays, etc.... :(
