Hi Guys,

I see both axxess and afrihost are offering double data deals so it works out to R189 and R199 respectively for 100gbs (50+50). I was just wondering how good they are to use for streaming? I would imagine capped accounts are unshaped and un-throttled?

Unfortunately they are both the MTN network which is crap for steaming. If you want good streaming look at Web Africa or VOX.

Well the last two weeks ISP's have been having some issues and Afrihost more than usual. Both Afrihost and Axxess run of MTN backbone, but they manage their bandwidth differently. Most of the times Afrihost is decent, but NEVER have they been any good with streaming. I'm talking from a CappedAaccount experience, which should be unshaped. If streaming is going to be important for you, then rather look into a IS or VOX account.

The only reason I'm looking at them is because of the pricing. 100gb plus a 2mbps line rental works out to around R350. I cant seem to find a deal like that anywhere else. I guess it doesn't matter if the line performance is terrible.

Are there any other options around the same price? Is cybersmart decent? What backbone do they use?

You can get a home uncapped package with Web Africa for that price.

I just saw that now. And you think that web africa uncapped is better than afrihost/axxess capped? Even though AF claim their capped accounts are unshaped and WA uncapped is definitely shaped?

For streaming yes.

If you want to torrent wait till midnight for best results.

I don't see anything on Afrihost Client Zone regarding 2x data deals.

Check the small print at the bottom of this page:

"* General
- All Monthly Capped DSL Packages (excluding 1 GB) get FREE Double Anytime Data on top of the normal monthly data allocation, until 31 December 2014, at which point the offer will be revised or extended."

It is also clearly indicated with each specific package as "Extra Anytime Data*".

I bought a 10GB topup the other day (not more than a week ago) and I can tell you now, I didn't get 20GB!
But I'm guessing the topup isn't included in that is it now?

No, it isn't.

Just the monthly accounts qualify for this.

Having just experienced Axxess Capped double-data accounts, finding it to be terrible, and then Afrihosts' (and finding it to be equally as terrible leading to me claiming double money back guarantee), leads me to recommend strongly to you to stay as far away from anything associated with MTN as possible.

For streaming, you will pull your hair out, especially if you have a 10mbps line as you'll only be able to stream at 20-25% of line speed, MAX.

Best to pick a more expensive option and bite the bullet, you pay for what you get ultimately. Buy cheap, buy twice.

I only have a 2mbps line. using the 1 gb trial and it's been surprisingly good. Anyone use cybersmart?

I just use it to download stuff FAST.
I have a 4MB line with a 2MB OpenWeb uncapped account which isn't all that great but I fill the gaps using the Afrihost / Axxess etc.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to use either of them to get fast downloads at all (Axxess / Afrihost)? I am in Rondebosch so we're on the same IPC.

The problem extends to the Axxess prepaid data as well, bought 20GB to keep me going until the end of the month and a new ISP, but couldn't even stream from DSTV catch-up last night. Netflix - fuhgeddabahdit! Downloads - 20% line speed.

Email to support reiterates the notice on their webpage. The slow speeds they are experiencing (even as of yesterday) are apparently still due to iOS updates. Laughable, really, when AfriMan has admitted in the other thread that their is a lack of capacity affecting services on the MTN network.

I couldn't, in good faith, recommend either to OP. But to each their own.
