So the other day I went to a dentist for a routine extraction.
Dentist tells me because of ( insert technical and medical claptrap here ) he can't do the extract and I need to wait a week while taking prescription antibiots.
Already R500 down and the tooth is still hurting like a bitch.

Week later the extraction is done at a cost of another R400 odd. I only have a hospital plan so not covered.

Mate tells me he had the same experience while having some basic stitches done for a routine cut on his finger.

Costed him R 1 750 because of anti - ( insert more medical claptrap here ) shots that was apparently recommended in that he take.

Warning: Watch these scammers. They make you more sick.

Doctors prescribing pain killers when you didn't even mention any pain, cough medicine when you don't have a cough, and then having all this crap already charged to your medical aid before you get to the counter.
Bunch of unethical scammers

Why do you assume the dentist was lying though?

Personally I don't believe that medical professionals lie in order to get more money. I mean, in the case you just mentioned, I have heard of the acids in an abscess denaturing anaesthetic. In other words, he could have given you an injection to numb the area, but it would have been completely ineffective. You would felt everything. Do you really want to feel your entire tooth being ripped out?

That is probably why he gave you antibiotics and told you to wait a week, so that the infection could subside. Maybe he also didn't want to risk it spreading?

The ONLY case I've had where I have been prescribed unnecessary antibiotics was because the doctor was incompetent, not because he was greedy. None of the money I spent on antibiotics went to him anyway.

I don't know, I assume that medical professionals want to help me, and generally I've been right.

Based on my experience of visiting a dentist, the Dentist won't do an extraction if you have inflammation.
The reason is because the anesthetic is not effective and will be very uncomfortable and painful.
Therefore , they give an antibiotic to address inflammation before they can do the extraction.

If the dentist prescribed antibiotics that need to be administer rectally to the OP, then he can complain that it had nothing to do with his teeth.

My wife needed a root canal last week Friday, the dentist wouldn't do it, cause the root is too inflamed and bleeding. Gave meds, temp crown and told her to come back in a week. Seemed normal to me.

The dentist followed the correct procedure. There is a reason why he is the dentist and you are the patient and it has mostly to do with him knowing what he is doing.

How would a doctor make money from prescribing you medicine?

real easy,

prescribe you lots of Expensive pills (Brand name) from XYZ pharmacy, and only XYZ pharmacy
take 30% commision afterwards,

rich GP

happened to my dad exactly that, nearly killed him with treatments as he used to be on discovery classic comprehensive,
when they see you have a good med aid, they dont do whats most effective and cheap,

they go for the most expensive treatments, as they get a FAT paycheck from the referral....
dosnt matter if they nearly kill you in the process

Umm, I've never seen a GP prescribe from a specific pharmacy, and if they did I would still go to the pharmacy I like going to anyway.

Nope.

they nearly put my dad on some serious heart pills once,
and he didnt even need them, when he dosent have that condition, total overmedication due to them seeing $$$ in their eyes!

You still don't seem to understand that the prescription is not for a specific pharmacy.

Which the doctor didn't see a cent of, he doesn't get to tell you which pharmacy to go to.

then why prescribe XYZ pills to somebody? not generic and not cheap alternatives

fair enough you can go to any pharmacy, and get any pills, but they do see the cash at some point,
even GP's have referral programs, and "arrangements" to prescribe XYZ to people....

fair enough, but remember,

when you walk in with a good med aid, like discovery classic comprehensive,
you are like a big bag of money that just walked through the door,

they will perscribe anything and everything to you just to get there hands on some of that dough.....
medical procedures you dont even need, equipment you dont actually require,

and bill you through the roof for it,

and yes you can go to any pharmacy, but how would you know whats actually needed and cheap
and whats actually needed but expensive and has side effects?

and GP's are not beyond getting referrals/commissions/kickbacks,

I saw it firsthand how some doctors will prescribe you anything they can think of just to make a quick buck,
even if it nearly kills you in the process!

Well if you had an infection in your tooth (abscess), then the antibiotics might fix it. There's a small chance. Does that sound correct?

A cut on the finger is prone to infection too, and you might get tetanus if it's from a nail or whatever, so they normally give you a lasting injection for that.
