Double Lane Traffic Circle

The coming from Cape Town to Joburg thing and traffic circles is a real issue for me. In joburg, anyone goes 'first come first serve' and in CT you wait while every single car on the right has passed before you even think about going. The latter is the way it is supposed to work right?

When entering a circle you have to yield to traffic on your right, those in the circle have right of way.

Thing is that everyone is correct here. Inside lane for 3rd & 4th exit is a best for good traffic flow inside the circle, but having recently done my test it is very clear that you need to check your blindspot and whatnot and then exit the circle only if clear on your left.

Imagine the situation where you want to take exit three and someone entering the circle from exit two wants to take exit three as well. In that situation you are both following the "rules" but you definately gonna have a bad time.

This is why you stick to the lane you are in. If you are in the outer circle, it's the left lane and if you are in the inner circle it's the right lane.

You are supposed to go around the circle again in that situation.

Some of these explanations are wrong according to the law. My mother had an accident in a two lane traffic circle and we did research as the insurance would not pay.

The lane you are in does not at all define your entry and exit point. It is up to the person on the inside lane to ensure it is clear for them to exit the circle at all times. If it is not clear to exit they need to continue around the circle until it is! They are also meant to go through the routine of checking mirrors and indicating as they are effectively changing lanes, or at least crossing over a lane, when exiting the circle.

The person in the outside lane is also fully entitled to carry on around the circle, which is what happened in my mom's case.

OMW, I don't wan't to be there when you are in a traffic circle :erm:

Not according to this:

Also the person on the outside lane who keeps going around can cause problems for the traffic on the inside lane.

Traffic circles are easy to understand. Driving beyond the 2nd exit on the left will cause problems, as you should have selected the right hand lane.

If you stop at at a circle, the cars in the circle has right of way, before you enter. And if you enter on the outside lane (left lane) and blocks someone that's already in the inside lane from exiting, then you're a d**s.

IMO, there isn't a lot of people in South Africa that knows how a traffic circle works. I mean, the use of indicators, how to enter and how to exit, etc.

This!

Most people in Cape Town know how a traffic circle work. As for Joburg...

In Cape town we have a few 4 lane circles with traffic lights.
My first few trips through them took quite a while...

I drive through these very often. And most times when that robot goes green someone will change lanes 2 or 3 times from entering to exciting these circles.
Lots of people cannot use it or are just plain lazy. The taxi drivers couldn't care less as usual.
A few years back I was nearly taken out by a bus at one of these circles.
I hate them because many people are so unpredictable when using it.

At 5 pm on a Friday they are lots of fun.

I haven't seen traffic circles like those anywhere else in the country.

Ndebeni circle has a double lane as well, but if your in the outer circle, you have to take the first turn left, as that's how it's marked.
Yet you still get twits who will stay in the outer lane and go around.

I always wondered where these twits learnt to drive, now I know it's durban.

Um, I think we all know, and it is well accepted, that Cape Town drivers are some of the worst around. The fact that your council feels the need to draw lines on the double lane traffic circles and provide you with arrows telling you what to do, and some of you still get it wrong, proves this generally accepted fact.

so to sum it up. legally if you are on the inside lane, you must make sure its clear to exit and not assume it is. anyone has an official link?

but on the road, the problem arises when you enter at 12 and want to exit at 9 so u take the inner or right lane. then at your 6, a car enters the outer or left lane wanting to exit at 12(their 6). here both parties are correct and assuming u dont keep track of where every car enters.

surely u cannot just exit directly from the right lane even if the exit is a double lane. i mean u cant just cut across a lane with moving traffic and say you was right.

No - it's the only city that understands traffic circles.

If you really want to confuse simple people. Put one of those mini traffic circles into the mix.
