Douwe Egberts coffee not available anymore?

So its "Just chemicals" not actual coffee beans, its not even made from things that used to be coffee beans.
It's close enough, so I'm happy with that. People tell me I'll get cancer from using sweetner, but it gets the job done so I ain't complaining.

Oh a scientist.

Yes, however as I pointed out the chemical makeup they use in instant are synthetic compounds used to mimic the flavor and effect of coffee.

I'm not sure what type of instant coffee you are familiar with but Douwe Egberts instant coffee is made from roasted and freeze-dried coffee beans (mixed with water). The flavour you get is definitely derived from the coffee beans - trust me, I was at one of their roasting plants in Utrecht, Netherlands .

Also started noticing this. Our Spar had no "Decaf" coffee for some time now, and it seems the regular is starting to disappear as-well.

Having actually been to a coffee factory several times I can say you are dead wrong. They brew massive containers full of coffee and send them through massive spray drying silos, the only difference is the level of chicory added which has a similar flavour to coffee but doesn't have caffiene in it. So your Ricoffy, Koffiehuis and Frisco are probably 60% chicory and 40% coffee, the more expensive the higher the coffee percentage is.

Oh I've not seen the freeze dried method, just the normal spray drying, almost similar to milk. Are the silos as huge for freeze drying?

Wow, but you are talking an insane amount of kuk.

Has anyone tried the Nescafe Alta Rica?
I see it in the shops, but its a bit pricy compared to Gold.

And how does it compare to Nescafe Gold?

It is very good. I drink Douwe as my instant go to coffee. I have a Lavazza machine at my house and at work though. I still see Douwe at Checkers, but less flavours, Also at Makro. At R125 per pot getting a bit pricy now though.

Nescafe Gold and Jacobs is only a few notches above Ricoffy for me though.

The coffee extract went through a huge freezing hall on a conveyor belt where it was subjected to (if I recall correctly) -50 degrees C temps.

I was talking about Riccofy etc.

Yes, DE and Jacobs have some traces of coffee, they also add a whole lot of other crud to make it in to syrup and then freeze and boil everything else out of it, then spray the coffee favor back in at the end.

Instant coffee these days is falling short big time. Im not getting the same satisfaction from Jacobs or Douwe.. Im sure Jacobs changed their recipe not long ago and it changed ever since then.

I generally only drink filter, espresso, nespresso, perculated etc but every now and then i need something quick and easy. Going to be tricky without some decent instant.

So was I :)

Sure dude. Enjoy your freezed dried kuk...

Calm down Captain Coffee...99% of the times I drink Lavazza from my machines or coffee via press. But claiming that Douwe only contains traces of coffee is simply not true, regardless of the process that you claim to understand, but obviously don't.

Just looked at a jar of Jacobs, ingredients are 100% freeze-dried soluble coffee.

Sure, I can taste the difference between Jacobs and an espresso that's been pressure-filtered through an Italian supermodel's lower body hairy bits, but Jacobs still has a time and place.
