Downgrading ADSL from 4 meg to 384 ....

I was wondering if there are any associated costs with downgrading one's 4 meg ADSL line to 384.
I dont think there should be anything but it always help posting here as I know someone would have
had a simmiliar experience.

Dammit, read a few things on the forum dated 2007 but wondered if they changed their policies in the meantime.
Speaking to Telkom is like speaking to a brick wall and you get mixed information most of the times ....
 
Yup, they do charge.
Last time I did something like this they charged me R400.. almost 3 years ago though.
 
You can always try cancelling the ADSL line and then doing a self install at 384K but there is a chance that they suddenly won't have a line available for you any more.
 
I don't think I got charged for it, but I went back to 4m a few months later.

Go to a Telkom shop if you want it changed, DO NOT speak to them over the phone. They will mess it up.

Yep the charge you for it. It's cheaper to cancel the 4meg all together and ask for a "new" self install 384 option FREE a day later.

Might just take that to heart ....

However dont think I will get used to the speed differrence ... how much do you reckon will one be able to download from say any ISP using Seacom via 384 with NNTP client with 50 bots in a time period of 1 day?

AFAIK simply downgrading doesn't cost you anything. If you're on some kind of Do contract it would cost you, though.

Hey guys,

Figured I'd piggy-back on this topic instead of opening a new one, seeing that my one question has sort of been answered here with regards to line degrading.
Anyway, my new question is what connection skype would need for a decent conversation, post office-hours? Would a 384k line suffice? We currently have a 4Mbps line with a 5GB WA account, though skype is the major use for all with regards to speed.
I'd also add that general downloading would be quite essential, but at 4 meg speeds, you loose 5GB veeeeery quickly. Uncapped at low(er) speeds shouldn't cause many issues, right?
(The main reason for the downgrade is to take up a new uncapped account, either with SAOL or SAINET. Digichilli is on the fence still. Any opinions? Seems both of the former ones only have high praise from members...)

I'd say around 3gigs on a great day. 2 shouldn't be a problem. It's hard to be completely accurate when making such calculations as there's a difference between theory and practice.

Money wise it does make sense, storage and connection cost wise ... Doubt if I'll downgrade ... just drink less beer in a month .... and not eat the last week of the month ... just kidding .... :p
