My contract is due in September and am not interested in an upgrade, actually what I want is to cancel the contract when it ends but I am concerned with my number, I heard that when I don't upgrade the number will be taken away from me, I have established a lot of personal interest with this number for the past 4 years, it would be bad for business to suddenly be no longer available.....

is it possible to downgrade and get a mere R50 contract and keep my number

Just convert your number to prepaid when the contract ends...

+1

You have to phone them before your contract expires, they will flag the account to automatically change to prepaid at he endof the month that your contract expires

Convert your number to prepaid at the end of your contract.

Should you not want to stay with your SP you can then port your number to another SP

Then you can start a new contract if you wish...

Convert to prepaid with current service provide BEFORE you port your number.

EDIT: that is IF you want to change service providers...

You don't lose your number. If you don't want to continue with the contract, you can always "downgrade". However, you'll most likely have to sign another 24 month contract for that to happen (because if your current contract lapses, it just continues on the same package as it were before)

However, you don't have to take another phone (if you're happy with the one you have) so you can get away with a R200 contract but only pay like R77 for it (inclusive CLI). This'll give you TopUp Prepaid worth R200 each month incl 25 SMSes for that price. (This is with MTN though, not sure about other service providers)

In the last 12 years of having the same number, upgrading from prepaid to contract, upgrading that several times, downgrading it, going back to prepaid and then upgrading it again, I always kept my number. It's only when your phone goes inactive for several months that they now "regenerate" the number (because of the shortage of numbers) to reuse it for someone else.

Hi AcidRazor

Do you have a link for the monthly R77 subscription - I currently pay R99 for R200 AnyTime minutes plus 25 sms, iirc, MTN call it BYO/UYO (Bring/Use Your Own)Phone.

cheers
