Downgrading to a very cheap car

I have been considering selling my Fortuner 4x4 and downgrading to a cheap R30000 runaround. Something like a '97 150i Honda Ballade or '94 Jetta.

The reasons for getting the Fortuner were mainly for gravel road driving and for regular shopping days and outings with in-laws. My needs have changed as we now don't need/use the Fortuner for what it was intended initially.

Another reason is to accelerate our savings. I will sell and settle my HP agreement and buy the el-cheapo car cash.

I could save in excess of R8000 per month.

The SO has an i10 that we as a family of 5 fits into comfortably. The el-cheapo will be mainly for my travel to work.

Any thoughts or suggestions.

How far do you travel to work and back. Not a lot of R30K cars are all that reliable anymore.

Good idea.
But do you have to go so cheap? Those cars you mentioned might not be too reliable. My advice would be to probably get something newer, it will still be cheaper, but you will also have peace of mind.

I am almost in the same boat but the resale on my car is so bad I might just have to write it off.:D

My kids are 3, 7 & 12. We can actually fit in the M-I-L when going shopping.

I've seen fairly good cars for the price. Maybe I could up the budget to R40k. I don't want to finance it.

I will be travelling roughly 50km a day with very little start/stops. And I want something with an aircon.

I'll keep it for 6 months to a year and upgrade to a corsa bakkie.

those cars you mentioned are great.

but personally i would up the budget to like 35k and look for a 2003(or there abouts) opel corsa lite, with aircon at least. its cheap to maintain and comfort to an extent.

A lot of people drive really old cars that are very reliable the key is to find a good car to begin with and then find a mechanic in your area that knows the make/model well and don't skimp on repairs or services. For the ones you mentioned you can pick up import motors and gearboxes for very little money so if things do go wrong it wont cost a arm and a leg.

I will be saving R8k a month and would have a decent cash flow for repairs and maintenance.

Its a great idea just make sure the money goes to the right places and not into the spending sack. :)

I stopped buying new cars a while ago and the financial freedom / security the "extra"money has given me is awesome.

I would go with a Honda Ballade 99 model, has P/S and A/C and its a family car.

I have a 2005 Toyota Tazz. It was 36k last year, sure it'll be even less this year. Best thing I ever bought. It's cheap to maintain, reliable, doesn't use much fuel, and parks easy.

Go for a good secondhand Hyundai Getz or similar, not older than 4 years and not more than 75k is usually my criteria I use.. bought myself back in the day a 3-year old Getz with 60,000 km on the clock for R85k I think (2010) and haven't had any troubles to this day, my 2c..
