I have a 2005 Toyota Tazz. It was 36k last year, sure it'll be even less this year. Best thing I ever bought. It's cheap to maintain, reliable, doesn't use much fuel, and parks easy.

not sure about the park easy and fuel.

the 1,3 carb engine is very heavy in traffic.

I could never fit in parallel parking , no power steering just could not make it lol

How far do you travel to work and back. Not a lot of R30K cars are all that reliable anymore.

I traded in my micra for R35 k it was 6 years old and ran great. So depends what you are looking for

My kids are 3, 7 & 12. We can actually fit in the M-I-L when going shopping.

I've seen fairly good cars for the price. Maybe I could up the budget to R40k. I don't want to finance it.

I will be travelling roughly 50km a day with very little start/stops. And I want something with an aircon.

I'll keep it for 6 months to a year and upgrade to a corsa bakkie.
errrrrr,

i10, merc c200, bmw 320, vw jetta etc... are all certified for 5 people.

And by law each person needs their own seatbelt to strap themselves in.

so your i10(or any other 5 seater) with 6 people in is against the law, and you could be fined.

In your price range. I would look at the 2007 Honda Jazz. The top of the range comes with 4 airbags and it is a very reliable car.

Maintenance costs are low when using an independent mechie. Oil filter needs to be changed only every second service. There is only one regular failure item on these models. It is the engine mounting. Aftermarket replacement can be had for 450. And it is easy to do labour R100

The Honda Jazz is from R45k upwards. I will probably end up with a Corsa or Honda Ballade. I've seen a few neat ones advertised.

I will start doing more intense research and go for test drives in December when I'm on leave. There should be a few bargains around that time of the year.

I agree on the el cheapo move. My car is 8 years old and I have it for 4 years now and have decided to take it to its grave ever since the dealer offered me el cheapo money for it.

I was in the market of buying the Honda Mobilio about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Had a look and realized our cars are in perfect nick. Why go an make another R 100k debt. I would rather let that saving pocket grow a bit more and drive our current vehicles till their wheels fall off. This driving a new car every 2 - 3 years aint doing it for me no more.

Every 5 years doesn't work anymore either. Got to do 10-15 years. Bloody bankers and dealers have got to work harder for their money.

The Honda Jazz is listed as the most reliable car in the UK. Followed by the non turbo lancer.

My Honda is doing ok.. But given the option I would change it as the petrol price makes it expensive.. Keep in mind that most fuel economical vehicles get at least 2x mileage of the vehicles which are a decade and a half old.

True, but the reliability is way less than your honda. The costs of servicing and parts is also higher. The new jazz are very expensive compared to the old one. R2000 just for spark plugs, this does not include labour to fit(Dsi)

The jazz might cost you more in petrol, but servicing and reliability is unmatched. Also ours did 6,8 - 7L/100km.

I could save in excess of R8000 per month.
Wise decision, 5 years ago, I got 5 year old Honda (Civic, 150i) for 80K and is still running fine. Just servicing expenses and some minor fixes so far. As per local trend (SA), had I bought a new car back then, by now I would have paid installment of 240K rands (assuming a modest 4K payment per month). Good luck, however, if I was you, I would up the budget to 50K even if it is a Honda.

I've been looking around and will probably up my budget to R40k.

We had a look at some cars today and my wife is happy with what she saw.
